The young mothers didnt tell their children they had the coronavirus. Mama was working hard, they said, to save sick people.
Instead, Deng Danjing and Xia Sisi were fighting for their lives in the same hospitals where they worked, weak from fever and gasping for breath. Within a matter of weeks, they had gone from healthy medical professionals on the front lines of the epidemic in Wuhan, China, to coronavirus patients in critical condition.
The world is still struggling to fully understand the new virus, its symptoms, spread and sources. For some, it can feel like a common cold. For others, it is a deadly infection that ravages the lungs and pushes the immune system into overdrive, destroying even healthy cells. The difference between life and death can depend on the patients health, age and access to care although not always.

Both women rushed to see doctors. Chest scans showed damage to their lungs, a tell-tale sign of the coronavirus that is present in at least 85 percent of patients, according to one study.
In particular, Ms. Dengs CT scan showed what the doctor called ground-glass opacities on her lower right lung hazy spots that indicated fluid or inflammation around her airways.
So much more and it is heartbreaking: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/13/world/asia/coronavirus-death-life.html?ref=oembed
I had tears running down my face reading this. These courageous women fought to help those sick and dying. See, this is another lie we are being told, only over 60 or those with contributing factors should be concerned. Fact is both women were 29 years old.
I am sick to death of the lies we hear from the WH every few hours. They come out and hold a rah rah campaign, slap each other on the back and kiss donnie's ass sayin' what a fantastic job he is doing. He withheld the dire threat well known to him since January. He withheld testing kits and continues to do so. The Commander in chief wanted to win an election and leave a million or more Americans dead to do so.
I can't even.

If the baby follows the pattern so far, the baby will survive.

(5,942 posts)Thanks for posting this sheshe. There are too many people who aren't taking this seriously. I typically hate it when the media glorifies disasters with pic after pic that people salivate over (rubberneckers piss me off too), but there are some things people need to be reminded of. I hope that our collective better nature is going to win out, but with so much happening with such rapid regularity - shooting after mass shooting, natural disaster after disaster - I'm worried people have shut themselves off from feeling anything. I'm worried that people will give up.

(11,949 posts)Our parents were lucky to never have one. Depending on your age your grandparents as well.
We are the unlucky generation. No matter what thousands were going to die. With a real leader our losses would be way less.
But we as a people will make it thru. We always do. Unfortunately some of us wont.
After my wife and I read The Great Influenza a decade or so ago I remember telling her I hope it does not happen in our lifetimes. Because that book made it obvious we are not even close to eliminating pandemics. Looks like we drew the short straw.
And in the big picture my grandparents and every generation before always knew multiple people who died young from viral or bacterial sickness. We see it as un-natural which is a sign of progress. After the 1918 pandemic there was huge support for increased research into disease which led to the discovery of viruses and eventually the discovery of DNA. If it gets as bad as I fear no politician will ever survive by being against investment in public health and strengthening our healthcare system.
We will be fine.
Obviously, I am an optimist!

(14,145 posts).... hope it would not effect the stock market/economy,... then come the warmer weather in the Spring the whole concern would magically disappear and we could all just go to the beach and frolic on the sand.
This way trDump would keep people in the blind, not worry about people going into a state of panic.
But most important of all if the reality of this health concern was kept a secret,... minimal damage would be experienced for his 2020 re-election campaign.
Hope for the best. Fabricate and lie to smother reality. If the worse should materialize blame Obama. Then convince people it could have been so much more terribly worse if it had not been for your superb leadership and excellent executive administration to guide us out of this epidemic of horrendous proportions.

(111,255 posts)We weren't worth protecting. He has been exposed a couple of times that we know about and the only thing that makes him think there might be something to this is the hit his stocks have taken. He is a malignant narcissist. He will not self quarantine and he is unlikely to forgo his stupid pep rallies.
Do I think this could have been contained? Unless the test picked up coronavirus shed by people who are not yet ill, probably not. Italy wasn't as stupid as our government was and it's a disaster there.
Still, prompt action including emergency sick leave, large scale emergency testing, and PSAs about how to protect oneself could have done a lot to mitigate the crisis. Naturally, the administration and McConnell could be counted upon to do nothing.

I know you keep reminding me of my signature line, but I have no idea if we will recover from this absolute horror. I'm right there with you, I can't even.
Sending you hugs for strength.

(83,751 posts)Your sig line says it all.
I hope we can make that true. There will be a few less of us...yet we can make it through the darkness and stand for those that cannot. I hope to be there to.
Thank you.

(32,017 posts)While it's true that the percentage of elderly and compromised people who may not survive COVID-19 will be higher, the raw number of fatalities will be higher among those with very healthy immune systems that can be triggered by a self-destructive cytokine storm. At least, this appears to have been the case with the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic, and it's the most likely cause of death in the case of the woman mentioned in the OP.
