A compassionate cab driver is being hailed for saving an elderly woman from getting scammed out of $25,000 two weeks ago.
Raj Singh, who is the owner of Roseville Cabs in California, was called to pick up a 92-year-old woman from her home in Sun City and take her to a nearby bank. As they were driving to the bank, however, the woman revealed some alarming details about her trip.
The woman told Singh that she had received a call from an IRS employee telling her that she owed the government $25,000. She was on her way to the bank so she could withdraw the funds and settle her debt as quickly as possible.
Singh knew that the phone call sounded fishy. He then asked the woman if he could call the IRS employee to ask him some questions. Upon calling the number, the man posing as the government agent claimed he didnt know the woman. When Singh pressured him for more details, the man blocked Singhs number.
The woman was still hesitant about the scam, so Singh took a detour to the Roseville Police Department and asked for an officer to sit down with her.

(23,952 posts)It is a horrid thing how these people prey on the elderly. There are so many victims you never hear about.
I was taking my Mom shopping once before we had to put her in a retirement home. Two men approached us in the parking lot, with a song and dance about exchanging checks with my mom, because they needed the money and the bank wouldn't cash their check. Mom actually hesitated, and seemed ready to do what they asked. I jumped in their faces, and said--do you think we are that STUPID?! I pulled out my phone, and said, I'm calling the cops right now. They vanished in a hurry. I'm sure they continued trying....small town with many elderly folks.

(29 posts)Yeah, I feel sad to know that there are even some people who fall victim to these IRS scams these days. These scammers have been around for years using this trick. I have just Googled up about it and found some reports filed at https://www.whycall.me/760-810-4313.html since 2018! I personally choose to just ignore any calls if I'm not familiar with the numbers. It's safer. We should keep spreading the word to family about how these scammers work.
