If they keep releasing harsh ads that become the story themselves, the ads will get free exposure in the press.
Aside from potentially getting free press exposure, they are counting on their shocking nature making the ads "go viral."
My mother-in-law, who is in her early 80s and not on any social media whatsoever, had never heard of the Lincoln project until a niece of hers emailed her the link to the McSally ad. Now she's looking them up online to see the other ads they've made.
Just by generating buzz, their audience will grow in any number of ways.

I even understand the point and want to like it but just doesn't work imo
