The cases of Michael Cohen and Lev Parnas are instructive in this regard. Former idolatry was replaced by anger and feelings of betrayal. I would like to see focus and perhaps a well-financed political video of how Trump has dealt with the military. I think we can peel off a lot of support there. The video should include:
1. TBI is just a headache;
2. Money transferred from military housing and schools. against Congressional will, for the wall;
3. Generals are babies, dopes, and losers, and don't know how to win

(6,407 posts)And the second amendment zealots. They are part of the Trump Cult. But the military, which is traditionally conservative but sane and patriotic, could really get angry at the multiple betrayals and thoughtless dismissiveness of Trump. A well produced video on TV would push the issue.

(11,530 posts)I'm all the time seeing right wing bullshit memes on facebook, but seldom see anything from the left. I'd have to guess that russian troll bots are behind much of this.
In any case, I wish we had more 'facebook ready' material would could use to counter the right wing propaganda out there.

(58,785 posts)Betrayal would be huge also, of course, but we see how often they accept the lies that come with betrayal to justify and/or deny it. That's been happening from the beginning, but the 80% of conservatives still approving Trump will vote to continue it.
The end is far more likely when they finally come to realize their "strong man" isn't and isn't going to pull victory out of a hat and smite us with it.
Religion isn't the opiate of the people, it's more basic: It's lies. Secular, religious, appeals to hate, appeals to idealism, whatever lies work.

Should throw in somewhere, of course, that these are not the more moderate and less authoritarian conservatives who've been backing away. Unfortunately a minority, but we do see representatives of those on talk shows every day.

The relatively-healthy Trumpies are still with Donnie. Native-born, long settled Trumpie families are still with him. Rural Trumpies who dont think their livelihoods depend on farm spending are still with him. Florida Trumpies living far enough from the Sunshine States beaches not to notice the reek of red-tide dead fish are still with him.
Team Donkey probably wont get most Trumpies to wise up, but if we register new voters and peel away gored and still-hurting Trump voters, well have a good chance of ending the reign of Orange Julius.

(10,138 posts)They will have to be hurt a lot to give up on Trump. Unfortunately, everyone else gets hurt also. Medicaid, especially, pays the bills for those who need care for elderly parents or family members who are disabled. These statistics are from 2017, but the Kaiser Foundation reported that typical nursing home annual costs of $82,000 were almost three times the annual income of average seniors. Medicaid paid 62% of nursing home costs. I suspect the figures are higher now because costs have increased and our population is aging. Cuts to Medicaid will hit a lot of Trump supporters hard.

(16 posts)Here is Mayor Pete's take on Trump's attitude toward TBI/veterans issues (which he says make his blood boil). I'm with you, Major Pete. Add to your list: the mercenary nature of sending troops to countries that pay for their services (think Saudi Arabia), and pillaging (we've got the oil) countries (think northern Iraq) who ask for and receive our help. It is always, only about the money because Trump knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
