(34,137 posts)As he said tonight.
Crist is only a "good" guy compared to a whacko like pRick Scott. Crist followed the Bush playbook to the letter. His only mistake was to not follow the Tea Party playbook, too.
As a life long Floridian I would NEVER vote for Crist.

The thing to keep in mind about Gov. Crist is that he is close with Jeb Bush, and JEB! is not a good guy.

(19,348 posts)Despite our differences with the GOP, there is no denying the current teaklan run GOP is dangerous. They do no believe in compromise. They made that clear on January 20, 2009. They made that clear when they brought the world economy to the brink by threatening to default on the national debt.
Crist would have been a far superior Senator when compared to the neo-con horror Marco Rubio.

(2,419 posts)This isn''t about Crist's policies. He's a republican. There's bound to be issues you (we) disagree with him on. The real import is this: We have just gone through 4 years where republicans have done back-flips to avoid acknowledging that Obama is the President. They have attacked his legitimacy at every turn. Crist, a republican, got on national T.V., looked straight at the audience and said "Obama is my president". The biggest danger to our democracy is the refusal of people to legitimize those they disagree with. (republicans being the primary culprits). Having a republican making an unequivocal statement of support for the president, even though he doesn't agree with him on every issue, and say he is my president- he is our president- is extremely important. Its not going to sway one right wing nut-bag, but it speaks volumes to the great middle of the country and is a big step towards civility. The biggest danger presented by the modern republicans is that they pretend that Obama isn't the president of "their country". Because they don't agree with him, because he doesn't look like him, because he threatens their assumed positions of power and supremely. Nothing could be more UN-American. The fact is, he is the president and is the president, not of the democratic United States of America, but the President of the United States and its high time that point gets through to these people. Crist's speech serves to help marginalize these ugly devisive people. Every single step that we move along that path is worthwhile.

(25,415 posts)As the way it should be in the United States. He reminds me of some of the moderate Repubs here in Connecticut. Not the teabagging type. He respects the President. That was enough for me.

(2,419 posts)I forgot something else about this speech that struck me immediately. Contrast the rational, reasoned and articulate manner in which Crist made his case last night with the anger and vitriol that spewed from the Zell Miller when the republicans trotted him out as their "disaffected democrat" to attack Obama. Instead of irrational hate we got reason and honesty from Crist. That says a lot about him, I think it says more about the democrats.

(2,419 posts)Its how the democratic party will take back control and push the mean and divisive right wingers into irrelevance. Its also indicative of the fact that democrats don't view disagreement as a disqualification. If we agree on 8 or 9 out of 10 things, I can respect your disagreement and understand that we have far more common ground than not. In republican land, its follow the doctrine or you're a heretic. Hopefully there will be more Charlie Crists running from the lunatic revival tent of the republican party.

(25,029 posts)unless they are a form of the classic global liberal, aka economic right winger.
The definition of "moderate" becomes more of a joke by the day. I guess in a few years Dick Cheney will be moderate (if he isn't already).
Of course when "liberal" means the mid way point between Alan Simpson and Joe Lieberman such things are bound to happen.

(2,419 posts)Liberal ideas and policies have power. They also are the right way to govern a large and diverse nation. As more and more thinking people come to that realization, and as more and more people abandon the "us vs. them" mentality of the republicans, the ranks of the democrats will grow. This isn't the "conservativazation" of the democratic party, its the "liberalization" of the country. Perhaps more accurately, the re-liberalization of the country as we get back to the roots of what made the U.S. great. It may be incremental. It may include people who you don't like or maybe didn't always agree with. People change. Think long-term. Every move in our direction is a move in the right direction for the country.
