As a small part of my legal practice, I counsel folks about their estates and draft wills. It's part of being a small town lawyer.
For the first time ever, I convinced a client to make contingent bequests to charities. In her case, to animal welfare charities because, well, she's an animal lover. If her older sister dies before she does, the money goes to the charities.
She's excited about the potential for doing good. I'm pleased about having suggested she do so.
Some days, I really like this gig.

(29,474 posts)Law can be such a powerful tool for good. Pity that the lousy lawyers get the press. Most of them republicans, or so it seems.
I persuaded a family member to set up a donor advised fund at the end of last year... justified by the benefits of bunching donations, but it felt great to know that $ is earmarked for good... mostly environmental/wildlife donations last year, probably similar going forward.
Enjoy the feeling, TS

(15,489 posts)I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Those kinds of bequests sometimes arrive at important times when funds are scarce and an animal needs specialized vet care.
Good work, Tom!
