"I've been trying to put into words how big a tragedy the Ukraine Airlines crash is for Canada." ...

Twitter thread from a Canadian about the Ukraine Airlines crash.

There were 63 Canadian citizens on the flight, but many more were landed immigrants or in Canada on visas.

There were 138 empty seats on the connecting flight from Kiev to Toronto.

Canada is a big country. We have big hearts but a small population.

Nearly everyone killed was an immigrant. But nobody's talking about that.

Our headlines focus on the fact that they were Canadians, with deep roots here, who touched countless lives.

The way it should be.

origin or ethnicity.

In the case of my coworker it was America, but same thing applies. We all have to be mindful of the pictures in our heads; present company (as in myself) included.

I was just surprised at myself in how I pictured them, probably subconsciously by associating them with my Canadian friends of whom only one is western European origin.

Most of the Canadians that I know live here and for some, who are from another continent have dual citizenship or more.

Somehow I think the Ukraine element may have thrown me but, I don't know, I just hadn't made that connection at the time i guess. I mean, I have a degree in cultural anthropology and I am not a pearly-white skinned person and I see only one race, ethnicity and attending cultural ideals and practice is something that interests me... the horrid disruptions due to war are forcing some interesting movement of populations that are hard to keep track of and so I guess I forget some of the dynamics on a timely basis. There's so much happening right now, can only focus on so much.

I hear that many aboard were Canadians of Iranian origin who were academic experts on Iran.
This is a huge loss for knowledge as well as a heartbreaking personal loss for families and for Canada. The fog of war is a horrible thing and this was caused by Trump and Pompeo’s disastrous foreign policy.

And he is supported by much of the Republican Party, whose members have turned a blind eye to the depravity of their president. These may have been unintended consequences, but I have no doubt that Trump simply does not care what happens to people who are not members of his family. Everyone else is expendable, including the Republicans like Lindsey Graham who suck up to him. And now, we are facing the consequences of the utterly stupid decision to pull out of the nuclear agreement with Iran, thus unleashing the consequences we see now. A couple of hundred people are dead because of Trump’s bad decisions, which are based on jealousy of Obama, not on our national interests or those of simple humanity. I am sick of this man, and I want him removed from office. He is a danger to our national security and a menace to people everywhere. May he reside in the hell he has created.

The triplets went with her because none of them had ever been to Seattle. I see it as similar to the flight that crashed and can only imagine the grief that Canadians are experiencing.

My condolences to the country to the north, a nation that I hold dear because I have family roots in Quebec.

Canada was about as ripped up about September 11 as America was. On that day, we lost about 2400 Americans and about 24 Canadian citizens.

In the flight that just went down, they lost almost 70 Canadian citizens and about 70 people who were Canadian immigrants who were in Canada that were not citizens. Canada's total loss is about 6 times worse than it was on September 11, 2001.
