When this happened, my two teenage boys (white, middle class) thought he was being dickish for no reason, then they noticed the hat and said "Oh, he's one of those".

(52,209 posts)if the amount is sufficiently nominal, be it $1 or even $10,000, in practice few corporations would like to keep paying lawyers a ton of money when only a small sum is at stake.
and jerk who sued can then go on tv or ghost-write a book or go on the right-wing lecture circuit and make a mint (the settlement may prevent him from disclosing details, but that never seems to stop people profiting of the notoriety from such things.)
point is, there's plenty of room for him to have lost money overall from the legal case after paying lawyers and to still make money off the incident as a whole.

(5,557 posts)The lawsuit claims malice where it was probably just the usual bad info of a breaking story. Still there is risk, especially if they expected it to go through a right leaning court. WaPo tried to have the portion against them dismissed and were denied. I wouldn't be surprised if they settle as well.

I'm betting the argument here is that CNN knew there was a more accurate side to this story .. and deliberately went with juicy and inflammatory. Thus deliberate negligence or malice.

People should educate themselves first, THEN react. Did you know that RW brains send input by emotional centers FIRST? After that for cognitive analysis, if they bother by then. That's how they've turned themselves into what they've become.
Most Democratic brains process the other direction: Info gets sent for intelligent analysis first, including by our funds of knowledge, and then to the emotional center for reaction.
Learn, think, then react.

(2,201 posts)Maybe news networks should go back to putting a little more emphasis on putting out a correct story, rather than putting an incorrect story out fast.
Maybe my memory is failing me as I get older, but it seems to me that news sources used to pride themselves more on being correct, than being first.
