(22,029 posts)Like their comparison of Trump's impeachment rationale with Bill Clinton's. That bordered on incredulous to me.

(14,971 posts)An editorial published Thursday by Christianity Today, a magazine founded by the late Rev. Billy Graham, called for President Trump's removal from office in the wake of his impeachment, deeming him "grossly immoral."
"We have reserved judgment on Mr. Trump for years now. Some have criticized us for our reserve. But when it comes to condemning the behavior of another, patient charity must come first. ... To use an old cliché, its time to call a spade a spade, to say that no matter how many hands we win in this political poker game, we are playing with a stacked deck of gross immorality and ethical incompetence."
Why it matters: Christianity Today is an influential mainstream magazine for evangelicals, with 4.3 million monthly visitors on its site and hundreds of thousands of print subscribers. President Trump won 81% of the evangelical vote in 2016, a group that makes up about 25% of the electorate, according to the Pew Research CenteHighlights: The editorial calls Christianity Today's stance a moral choice similar to how the magazine reacted when former President Bill Clinton was impeached.
"[T]he facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the presidents political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral."
"Trumps evangelical supporters have pointed to his Supreme Court nominees, his defense of religious liberty, and his stewardship of the economy, among other things, as achievements that justify their support of the president. ... None of the presidents positives can balance the moral and political danger we face under a leader of such grossly immoral character."

What a disgrace Franklin Graham is (I think I read his father helped to start this publication).

(2,075 posts)That was my big takeaway from the Monica Lewinsky scandal and Clinton's impeachment. But ahh, I was much younger then, and much more lighthearted, too. But comparing Trump to Clinton is drawing false equivalencies, and comparing apples to oranges. Bill Clinton managed to do a very good job of running the country even while he was embroiled in the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the impeachment process that followed it. That's my position - the president was elected to run the country, and whatever else he does in his private life is his own business - and no one else's.

Trump Should Be Removed from Office
Its time to say what we said 20 years ago when a presidents character was revealed for what it was.
Mark Galli
In our founding documents, Billy Graham explains that Christianity Today will help evangelical Christians interpret the news in a manner that reflects their faith. The impeachment of Donald Trump is a significant event in the story of our republic. It requires comment.
The typical CT approach is to stay above the fray and allow Christians with different political convictions to make their arguments in the public square, to encourage all to pursue justice according to their convictions and treat their political opposition as charitably as possible. We want CT to be a place that welcomes Christians from across the political spectrum, and reminds everyone that politics is not the end and purpose of our being. We take pride in the fact, for instance, that politics does not dominate our homepage.
That said, we do feel it necessary from time to time to make our own opinions on political matters clearalways, as Graham encouraged us, doing so with both conviction and love. We love and pray for our president, as we love and pray for leaders (as well as ordinary citizens) on both sides of the political aisle.
Lets grant this to the president: The Democrats have had it out for him from day one, and therefore nearly everything they do is under a cloud of partisan suspicion. This has led many to suspect not only motives but facts in these recent impeachment hearings. And, no, Mr. Trump did not have a serious opportunity to offer his side of the story in the House hearings on impeachment.

(13,776 posts)I bet most evangelical pastors subscribe even if not all their church members do.
I loved the part asking the readers how they can witness for their faith while defending a person like Trump (or words to that effect). That, in a nutshell, is what Ive wondered about evangelicals all along.

I sent the link to his Mom tonight. I hope it registers before they get here. We've been stewing for days on how this visit was going to go. This essay gives us all we need to survive.
There is much fault to be found in much of it, but many gems are there to use!
Peace and Happy Holidays to everyone....
