Some moments you never forget. Seeing my bride walk down the aisle toward me at our wedding. Driving my first car home. And now, in a somewhat distant but still significant third place: my initial glimpse of the new, industry-changing Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup in a clandestine September meeting at the automaker's Los Angeles design headquarters.
Few outsiders have ever been inside the top-secret Tesla Design Studio, which is nestled away next to the sprawling SpaceX factory, a Falcon 9 rocket, and a scale replica of Elon Musk's Hyperloop in a corner of the Hawthorne Airport. Elon and his right-hand man, chief designer Franz von Holzhausen, invited us to be the first journalists, and first outsiders, to see the automaker's most hotly anticipated debut since the Model 3: the Tesla pickup truck.
Leading up to the truck's public unveiling, MotorTrend went behind the scenes with the Tesla team, provided feedback, and watched the Cybertruck go from a life-size clay model to a (literally) bulletproof working prototype.

(13,496 posts)Sorry. I know people love Tesla. But the truck looks freaking stupid.
ExciteBike66
(2,358 posts)ICE trucks tend to be shaped like bricks because they don't have to follow car-like MPG standards.
If Tesla had made it aero with curves, it would have ended up looking like a Mon Calamari cruiser...

(13,496 posts)so this car is not marketed to me at all. I'm sure it will sell bc there is a huge Tesla fan club out there. And electric trucks are cool, in general.

(13,786 posts)3mm is very, very thick (and heavy), nearly 1/8" thick.
3mm =~ 0.118 inches or approximately 11 gauge. A quick search indicates that modern cars use 22 to 24 gauge steel.

Would you like your daily driver to be an armored car?
The skin of the Tesla Cybertruck will be made of the same stainless steel that is used by sister-company SpaceX for its coming Starship spacecraft. That means 301 stainless steel, and, in the Cybertruck, 3 mm thickness. Tesla claims this makes it bulletproof to 9mm rounds, but does not mention any armor rating certification.
"If fully hardened, 3mm of 301 stainless is more than adequate to stop any 9mm Luger round I can think of, apart from exotic stuff like dedicated armor piercing bullets, which you're not going to find on gun store shelves," said Iain Harrison, editor-in-chief of Recoil as well as a competitive shooter and former British Army captain.

(2,935 posts)The specs and price point are amazing but the looks are very polarizing. I have a feeling it will grow on me after they make a few alterations, before production.

(34,111 posts)I do not think this would easily pull my 35 foot horse trailer. How do you turn with one hitched anyway? One bad corner and ooops!
I think this is mainly made for those in towners that want a pick up because of something?

(25,586 posts)And considering the vast majority of competing truck designs dont include a fifth wheel that seems an unlikely issue for potential buyers.

I was sort of expecting a more standard looking 4 door pickup truck... with carbon fiber panels...
All this POS needs is gull wing doors to be a "back to the 1980s Delorian" mated to an El Camino.
good god I hope Elon didn't spend a lot of money tooling up to produce this... nobody is going to buy it.

(42,862 posts)Looks like it will tow our RV camper-trailer, HOWEVER... I can't imagine how I'd manage to tow anything without ANY side-view mirrors to make sure I've got proper clearance when changing lanes, or when backing into a camping spot.

(42,862 posts)It would REALLY take some effort to "re-train" myself to look at the console instead of side-view mirrors. I can see how that would be technically possible with hidden cameras mounted in strategic places on the body of a car... but when pulling a 20' camper, I imagine that there must be a detachable "remote" camera that one must affix to the rear of the camper (in order to see what's going on behind when backing up.)

(22,670 posts)146,000 Cybertruck orders have been made so far. Of those, 41% picked the most expensive tri-motor option and 42% of future customers chose the dual motor version. The remaining 17% picked the cheapest single-motor model.
It would appear that most want the most expensive versions, 83%.
