In the small town next to us, they received a threat credible enough to close down the schools for several days, cancel all activities and get the FBI involved. It is a town of about 2500.

(12,712 posts)I think there are some very deep and systemic issues concerning this culture that need more investigation, analysis and attention, but for now, that's one for the sociologists.
And no, mental health and video games, per se, are not a causative factor. Much of what we are seeing, in many cases, (not all) is symptomatic, but that's easily overlooked when we have a superficial, mass media that does not explore issues that have uncomfortable ramifications.
One very simple factor is that America has been and is a rather violent culture and this is not really acknowledged in popular venues, so we have a sort of a delusional facade that masks it, in my opinion. When you proceed from there and go deeper, things emerge.

And yes, our culture does have some pretty major issues overall.
In short: I agree entirely.

I'm now reconsidering ALL trips to any kind of large venue, store, etc... If anything I will buy the kids silly stuff from the $ store and maybe if they need stuff we will look online. Otherwise, living in a remote area could be something to worry about...(Northern Nevada is still very red, despite the state turning blue recently, and I feel like that is a common denominator)
while we cannot live our lives in fear, things are probably going to get worse (esp. in red states/districts) as Impeachment and corruption charges pan out

Still have a bunch of Rednecks in the position of Power, but, they are self eliminating themselves with their anti crap.

(60,010 posts)Wal-Mart said it will stop selling handgun ammunition and "short-barrel rifle ammunition," such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber, that can also be used on assault-style weapons after selling all of its current inventory.
Walmart (WMT) will also stop selling handguns in Alaska, the only state where it still sells handguns.
And Walmart will request that customers no longer openly carry guns into its 4,700 US stores, or its Sam's Club stores, in states that allow open carry.

(46,327 posts)Every time there is a multiple shooting, the "BAN ALL GUNZ!" zealots fall out of the woodwork.
Guns are out there. There are by all current estimates, 300-350 million guns.
Should ALL guns be banned?
It's already illegal to sell a gun to a felon or mental patient, or for them to own a gun or even have one on them.
So that means felons and mental patients only use knives? Hell no. They illegally get guns and will start shooting.
And who would enforce a gun ban, and how?
Have the ATF go door to door, ransacking houses and businesses, looking for the "wrong" guns?

Killing with guns is a way of live in the USA. Clearly citizens like it so or something would be done.

The Las Vegas shooter, outside of his massive gambling losses, showed no indication of being murderous.
Yet he killed over 50 people.
Improving the background check isn't the magic solution, but it will help some. This should be done, but the NRA and their stooges oppose anything that would prevent a gun being sold.
Likewise penalties for a felon having a gun should be increased. I'd say to 10 years.

Three young boys and two adults were fatally shot and another boy was wounded in a domestic dispute that escalated into a shooting on Saturday in southeastern San Diego, police said.
Police responded to a home in the Paradise Hills neighborhood where they found a 3-year-old boy along with mother and father dead inside early Saturday morning. Three other boys, ages 5, 9 and 11, were taken to a hospital where two of them died, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said during a news conference.
After the mother obtained a restraining order against the father on Friday, the couple got in an argument on Saturday morning. After shooting the family, the father turned his handgun on himself, Dobbs said.
