to come to work in dress casual as a suit, same with office staff. Even elegant topcoats are becoming less frequently seen today, technical fabrics allow people to wear simpler jackets, or even sweaters.

Pretty much every person was in a suit and tie. The few women that I saw had on rather elegant dresses. People simply don't dress like that today. I only own dark suits for funerals. I have dress shirts, but wear them so infrequently that I seldom have to replace them.

Stores like Barney's, Sachs, Nordstrom, Macy's prospered when people dressed formally for regular events like work and ballgames.
