It was the subject of much discussion on DU at the time. He was thoroughly pissed off by what he witnessed when reporting from the area, and was never the same after that.

If MSNBC hired Greta Van Fucking Susteren and Hugh Hewitt, they SHOULD be eyeballing Shep, now that he's a free agent.

He was reporting from in front of the Superdome and the on air host in the NY studio were laughing and making jokes about the people there.

Smith was outraged and yelled at them. You’re right, it changed him. He wasn’t the same after that.

He spoke out repeatedly against birtherism, turned early against the Iraq war, called out his colleagues on their bullshit. I think it went deeper than hating Trump. He doesn't like dishonesty.
