Fans come to aid for boy who made makeshift 'UT' shirt because he didn't have one
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) A boy who couldnt show off his favorite college team in another state on a special day got a "nation of Volunteers" coming to his aid.
A boy at a school near Orlando, Florida wanted to participate in a "College Day Colors" school spirit event.
He's a University of Tennessee Volunteers fan and had an orange shirt, but no UT lettering. So, he made his own logo, pinned it to his shirt - and got teased.
"Volunteer nation" got wind of the bullying, and came to his aid. A Facebook post from Interim President Randy Boyd read:
"I was touched to learn of a young Florida school students heart for the University of Tennessee, and I LOVED his imagination behind designing his own shirt. So many of us admire his love for UT and its awesome to see everyone step up to send him some UT gear!
#EverywhereUT"
Several school departments put together a "pride pack" for the boy, and hundreds of fans helped out from all over, including some from rival city Gainesville, Florida.
A deli in Knoxville pitched in too, sending supplies and a reminder to bullies: "You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us. Vol means all."
The university has created a "College Colors Day Tee" inspired by the student's shirt.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Vol Shop announced it is taking pre-orders for shirts based on a Florida boy's now-viral makeshift Vol design.
A Florida elementary school teacher didn't know the response she would get when she posted on September 4 to social media about one of her students, a Vol fan.
In little more than a day, Laura Snyder's post on Facebook got more than 2,000 comments and shares after she posted a picture of her young student's makeshift Vol shirt.
In the post, Snyder said, "Last week, my elementary school participated in college colors day. When I told my students about this day a week before, this particular child came to me and told me that he wanted to wear a University of Tennessee shirt, but he didnt have one."
Snyder said her student was "SO EXCITED" to wear an orange shirt, and when the college colors day came, she said she was surprised that he made a makeshift UT label for the shirt made out of paper.
However, Snyder said some other students had bullied him over the sign, and "He was DEVASTATED." Snyder said she wanted to get him a UT shirt and asked her Facebook friends if anyone had any connections with UT.
Little did she know that her request would get such a big response! The post had been up less than two days when the University of Tennessee responded.
Jim Delaney, the UT Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Experience, told WVLT News that the post had been shared with them earlier on September 5.
"As a marketing and fan experience guy, I absolutely loved the creativity that he showed there. And it got back to us and to the football team and to campus here, to the Vol Shop. And so we've all collectively come together, and we are sending him what we call a Volunteer proud pack."

(30,565 posts)too bad it's usually the mean ones who get the attention. It's great to see the nice ones being recognized for a change.

(87,117 posts)A Vol. proud pack sounds like a "thanks for the design, kid. Here's a couple shirts so you can advertise for us." Maybe a scholarship or something since they will likely make some $$ from the design.
