The Republican mayor of El Paso, Texas, said that President Donald Trump mocked him as a fake Republican last week during his visit to the border city following a deadly mass shooting there.
Dee Margo told PBS' "Frontline" in an interview - excerpts of which were published Wednesday - that Trump called him a RINO, a derisive moniker meaning "Republican in Name Only," when the two met after the president visited hospital staff and shooting survivors. The shooting, which targeted Latino immigrants, left 22 people dead and dozens injured earlier this month.
According to Margo, Trump was still steaming over a back-and-forth they had in February over his long-promised wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
He said, Youre a RINO, and I said, No sir, Im not a RINO, I simply corrected the misinformation you were given by our attorney general, and thats all I did, Margo told "Frontline," adding that the president grinned when the mayor pushed back against the nickname.

(31,450 posts)are owed money from the Trump campaign.
The expenses can be significant, especially for smaller towns like Lebanon, population 21,000. The Trump campaign bill would cover two days of police force operations there, according to CPI.
The Trump campaign owes a total of $841,219 to cities from Burlington, Vermont, to Green Bay and Eau Claire in Wisconsin, Mesa, Arizona, and Spokane, Washington, according to invoices. The largest bill $470,000 was for El Paso for a February rally, including $381,000 for extra police and $61,000 for fire department services. Erie, Pennsylvania; Billings, Montana; and Tucson, Arizona, are also still waiting for payment.

(16,254 posts)There should be some remedy for the cities. If he hasn't paid a city, they should be allowed to reject his rally or to not supply security unless he pays the old invoice and the new. None of our cities can afford that kind of abuse.

(37,130 posts)Coming from Trump, that may be praise.
Some falsely deny that Trump is a republican
Selected as a republican at the republican convention.
Ran as a republican.
Elected as a republican by the EC.
Acknowledged as the republican leader.
Certainly not an old style republican with morals, honor, ethics and integrity.
Those folks are gone.
But he's a republican.
