In 1867 the idea was brought up as a means to pressure the Brits into giving us Canada, but Johnson was dealing with impeachment and really, really bad poll numbers so said something on the order of "Not that shit, too!"

In 1947 Truman was receptive to the idea that Greenland would give us better access to the Northwest Passage and more ways to annoy the Soviets. We offered Denmark $100,000,000 but they turned it down.
