Chris and Jeff George of Wellington ran the largest pill mill operation in the country, prosecutors said, when the twins were arrested in 2010. Several members of the family were involved, including their mother, whom Jeff testified against. Here are some key numbers:
20 million doses of oxycodone pumped out over two years nationwide from five clinics in Palm Beach and Broward counties, including a hulking former bank building on Dixie Highway in Lake Worth.
At least 50 overdose deaths reportedly linked to that oxy.
$43 million earned in two years of pill milling.
$50,000 cash earned daily they had trouble finding places to put it.
$4.5 million was hidden by the twins mother in her attic. Denice Haggerty as well as Chris wife, Dianna, a former stripper, got 2½ years in federal prison in the conspiracy after Jeff testified against them.
Jeff got two 20-year concurrent terms in prison, one for second-degree murder. Chris got 14.

We watched a program about their criminal operation last night and had to wonder about their connections.

I am a good democrat, old school new orleans "reform democrat" machine. I've had that "hate America" question thrown at me ever since republicans became legal (as opposed to "legitimate" down here.

Not getting that bill through the Legislature resulted in Florida becoming the pill mill capital of the United States, said Burt.
There was heartache for thousands of families beyond measure and it didnt have to happen.

(269,534 posts)It wasnt just that Florida guaranteed a flow of cheap oxycodone. For 10 years, key lawmakers and agency heads repeatedly looked the other way as crooked doctors and bogus clinics flooded almost half the nation with the highly addictive drug.
In failing to crack down, Florida extended by years the amount of time highly addictive oxycodone would be available to both first-time experimenters and addicts. It gave criminals the raw materials for trafficking.
