Texas Republican Quits GOP: 'Trump Is the Worst President in the History of This Country'

Another lifelong Republican has left the party — this time, a Texas judge — citing her love for her country and her disdain for President Trump.

Following the departure of Rep. Justin Amash (I-Michigan) earlier this month, Texas Republican jurist Elsa Alcala announced on Facebook her leaving the Grand Ole Party. She, like Amash, specifically called attention to President Trump and the willingness of Republicans to excuse support for the President.

Let her be a beacon and an inspiration for other Republicans - local, state, and national.

Wanna bet how many will follow on a state or national level? No prizes. I'll go with under 5.

That's because they are, to a man and woman, racists and bigots. The men hate women. The women don't care.

So, what's the title of the book about WTF happened?

I'll start. It Did Happen Here

I hope her reasons for leaving the GOP will resonate with others in that party so that they too will leave it.

She has done a brave and smart thing by leaving them behind.

So that's good. But it's hard to imagine there aren't MORE.

I asked a friend who is "moderate" but comes from a Goldwater-style GOP family and has a lot of relatives who voted for Trump why the normal Republicans (I called them the Romney Republicans-- the ones who thought Romney was okay... I don't like Romney, but I think most of us would agree he's sane) stick with Trump on a level not seen since I don't know when.
He reported back that this is how much they hate Democrats, especially progressives. I said, but YOU'RE a Democrat. Do they hate you?
No, but they hate socialism. So they say. And they hate that.

I don't believe it- I mean, I believe they said that and that they think this is the problem. But no one was even talking about "socialism" like it's a true force until Trump decided to demonize it along with immigrants.
My amateur diagnosis-- Trump tells them to go ahead and hate. It's good to hate. It's patriotic to hate.
Most of them aren't really haters, but they have little angers, and he fans those and says these are super-important (today at least) and that they should get even more angry and focus on hating Democrats. I think it makes them feel energy or something.

I want to say to my uncle-- your children are being polite, but they don't like to visit you, and they block most of your Facebook posts, and they warn their children that they have to love you because you're their Grandpa, but they shouldn't listen to you or repeat what you say. You have given up the respect of your children for Trump. (And he doesn't even really like Trump even... just gets that 'energy' from him.)

Oh, well. It's impossible to understand them. There are just so many of them. There must be more of us.

various people have posted the many ways in which this country IS SOCIALIST. It's a good bet that ALL of those "fear Socialism" people benefit from at least one of our Socialist programs (Social Security??????). My mother's side of the family is Norwegian (Grandad was first generation), so I grew up with a different, positive view of Socialism. Too many people confuse it with Communism, and the Republican PTB thrive on that. It was amusing that Trump thought of Norway as a country from whom he'd welcome Immigrants: he was obviously thinking "skin color," not political philosophy.

..as oval office occupant.yet,.just as toxic.trump could resign, quit, be voted out and we're still left with the GOP, tbe grand ole party-- that promotes and supports discriminatory policies aimed at non white, non Christian, lgbtq, women, immigrants and refugees [even though at one point they or family members were said] any one remaining with republicans support his his/their racist, hateful cruel agenda./platform. And those who choose to leave...I ask, what took you .so long? We've been waiting for you--come, sit at our table..there is room for everyone here.

I am stealing this from a YouTube page called Innuendo Studios Conservatism is watered down, ineffectual fascism. I don't think that all conservatives are fascists by any stretch of the imagination. The ideology however, is a right wing ideology that is easily lead rightward. Conservatives (not necessarily Republicans) have always supported the power structures that align with White Supremacy and Aristocracy. It was the Democrats in the pre-Civil War period who aligned with the plantation owners and slave traders, who wanted to "Preserve the natural order". It was the Republicans in the 1890's who protected the robber barons which pushed Teddy Roosevelt (jingoistic and bigoted as he was) out of the party. Conservative Dixiecrats in the south split with the Democratic party in the 1960's over Johnson's support of the Civil Rights movement, and found their home in the Republican Party of today.

I am glad that this former Republican Judge has split and called attention to the special awfulness of Trump and the current party. I just hope that she doesn't expect the Democratic Party to uphold conservative values.

There’s no such thing as a Never Trumper, or Republican who has “come into the light”.

All the hate and horror in them that led to Donald Trump is still there, latent, hibernating until “He” is gone, and who they will say was never “a true conservative”, never a “true Republican”, deny, deny, and forget.

Until the next “Trump” clone appears...

A diehard conservative for most of her adult life, seeing the light and leaving the GOP in 1996. Trump's hard-core racist base will never change, although many others who wished for "change", and have only seen change for the worse, will continue to come around.

and legislators?

I'm glad she's leaving and making a statement, but hardly impressed by her avowed reason as stated. As it is, I'd like to hear she's also resigning her position because I suspect she lacks the intellectual and moral qualifications to be a good judge. Her bar should be far higher than Trump, which is no standard at all.

Trump loves guns and hates gays, taxes, abortion and brown people. That is ALL a significant number of his base cares about.

Forget the "he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose any support" thing. He could do far, far worse than that - I'm talking about things the mention of which is a violation of the Terms of Service of any liberal website on the Internet - and not lose any support.
