https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/07/puerto-ricans-seeking-georgia-drivers-licenses-face-specials-questions-about-frogs-and-plantains-lawsuit-alleges/Georgia has been requiring Puerto Rican natives seeking Georgia drivers licenses to answer a special set of questions such as identifying what a meat filled with plantain fritter is called; where a specific beach is located; and the name of the frog [that is] native only to PR,' according to a lawsuit filed this week.
The allegations in the complaint, filed in federal court in Atlanta against two top officials at the states Department of Driver Services (DDS), suggest that Georgia is singling out Puerto Ricans for questions that resemble the literacy tests used to deny voter registration to African Americans in the Jim Crow South. Without drivers licenses, Puerto Ricans moving to Georgia will struggle to find jobs and cast a ballot, where a photo ID is required to vote. A growing number of Puerto Ricans continue to leave the island, which has been devastated in recent years by hurricanes and economic crisis, for better opportunities in states like Georgia.

(25,936 posts)1. I can't do much other than register my complaint
but if I lived in Georgia, I would absolutely throw down over this - and that includes all attempts to resurrect the vestiges of the Jim Crow era.

If they could see fit to welcome those relocating to Georgia because of natural disaster, they could possibly win those votes for generations.
Doesnt make a lick of sense. I guess thats why I am a Democrat!

If you don't have a valid ID, you can't register to vote, or vote in an election. Of course this is a Jim Crow tactic to prevent Puerto Ricans from voting in Georgia. Shame on the GOP for trying to pass off this idiptic and blatantly obvious attempt to keep people from voting, especially when they tend to vote for Democrats.
