So, I was just watching CNN Tonight with Laura Coates filling in for Don Lemon. One of my favourite shows lately. Anyway, I skipped ahead on my program guide and almost threw up. Instead of their usual holiday documentary programming, Jake Tapper and Wolf Blitzer are BOTH on duty tomorrow and will be providing a 4-hour at least live special from 4 p.m. ET-8 P.M. ET. Worth noting that Wolf Blitzer isn't usually even on from 7-8. Totally disgusting, It's a partisan political event, as Laura just said as I'm typing this, and CNN is doing this???

(1,178 posts)Isn't CNN an media outlet Trump blasts as being "the enemy of the people"? So, why would they give someone who blasts them all the time coverage? That's what I don't understand.....all these outlets that Trump rails to his crowds against give him so much coverage. I'd refuse to do so.

(25,953 posts)I know, you don't use it very often, but don't forget that it's there.
Honestly, it really is as if people haven't a clue they can turn the TV off. Or even change the channel.
Me, I don't have a TV. I watch as much as I want to via the internet. When some sort of breaking news happens the local TV stations go to live streaming. The most recent example is the tornadoes in Lawrence, KS back in May. I was able to watch the nearby Kansas City, MO TV stations (EXCELLENT weather people on all of those stations!) and know exactly what was happening.
Were I actually interested in watching the President tomorrow I'm sure I'd have no trouble finding something live streaming. I don't happen to want to watch. Actually, even if we had a President I was quite enamored of, I'd probably not be watching her or him tomorrow. But that's just me. I don't watch very much TV.
Although I do spend far too much time on DU.

(54,710 posts)Although we now get CNN International here, we rarely watch it. It is constantly interrupted by commercials, and there is very little in-depth reporting, though probably not as bad as CNN in the States.
At any rate, we have better things to do today, anyway.
First of all, we have to pack, since we're leaving for the USA tomorrow. Then I have some colleagues from NL coming over. Then we have a July 4th celebration/cookout on the Rhein down in Köln organized by Amerika Haus. And then maybe 5 hours of sleep before heading over to the airport. If CNN wants to stand for "Conservatives, Not News," they don't need me to watch them.

(25,953 posts)Oh, dear lord. Since I haven't had normal TV in over eleven years now, I have zero patience for commercials.
I watch a reasonable amount of TV over the internet. I have Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. Plus a lot of things can be watched on other sites, including youtube. But it's the no commercials that I want to address. OMG. Commercials are awful. And I'm spoiled because I almost never see them anymore.
Shall I discuss political commercials? I know, I shouldn't, but I will. Because I don't have regular TV I NEVER see political commercials. When I first moved to Santa Fe in 2008 and didn't get a TV, but was watching stuff on the internet, I would see one and one only ad for a person running for Congress in my state. But he was in a different district, so I couldn't have voted for him anyway.
What is probably the very best thing about no political commercials is that I'm not subject to the bullshit of "Did you know my opponent pulls wings off flies? And that's why you should vote for ME!" The vast majority of them provide no real or useful information but are simply a slam on the other person. Because I never see those, I am free to do a bit of research to figure out why I should vote for one candidate and not the other.
Even in non political seasons, not seeing commercials has had an interesting affect on my life. Because I'm not constantly bombarded with the "Buy, Buy, Buy!" messages of normal commercials, I'm oblivious to most blandishments that my life would be better if only I had or bought this particular thing. Which is especially good for someone living on a limited income, as I am. I just don't feel deprived, the way I used to when I watched TV on a regular basis. So now, although my income is a bit below the median income for my state (and even more below the national median income) I don't feel deprived. I'm more or less unaware of what I ought to be coveting, and simply don't miss it.
Which is why I suggest to anyone that they ought to seriously consider getting rid of their TV. Honestly, you won't miss anything important.

(2,128 posts)Mute the sound of the speeches, I am all for broadcasting. It is much better to provide context than to bury our heads in the sand. It would help make the point the point that this behavior is not OK.
In the absence of those measures, I am in agreement with the other posters.

(13,776 posts)I think this will be an epic disaster and the most public demonstration of his literally insatiable ego.
There wasn't nearly enough time to prepare and it will show. And the tanks, in place of happy marching bands and tractors with people throwing candy... it will all be so Russian and North Korean. And then there's the predictions of bad weather and what I hope/assume will be empty stands. I'm glad it's happening in full view and I'm glad it will be on national TV.

(15,328 posts)On Comcast, Bloomberg TV is carrying the Boston Pops 4th of July concert and fireworks. NBC has NYC/Macy's concert and fireworks. PBS will show "A Capitol Fourth" concert. Local stations, like the ones in Pittsburgh, will show local celebrations and fireworks.
Comcast Sounds of the Seasons music channel continues playing 4th of July music 24/7 complete with factoids about America.
Perhaps CNN's decision is based on nothing more than an inability to turn away from what will surely be a train wreck of a speech.
