Nearly 31 years ago the US Navy shot down an Iranian airiner.

All 290 passengers died including 66 children.

While I'm sure it was an accident we never apologized.

Now there are people who want us to go to war because an unmanned drone was shot down?

There was some retribution delivered by Iran, as I recall, around the lives and people of the Captain that was in charge of the ship that shot the missile but I can't give more detail.

In 1996, the United States and Iran reached "an agreement in full and final settlement of all disputes, differences, claims, counterclaims" relating to the incident at the International Court of Justice. As part of the settlement, the United States agreed to pay US$61.8 million in compensation for the Iranians killed. The United States did not admit responsibility or apologize to the Iranian government.

but Reagan certainly issued a diplomatic apology and publicly admitted it, which is more than I would have given him credit for at the time. Bush41 was a bellicose ass about it and that probably complicated matters in terms of a UN apology.
