He so desperately wants to be a member of the cultural and intellectual elite crowd of NYC, yet these are the people that relate to him. He must inwardly be cringing that these are REALLY his people, not the high-society that he so wants to be embraced by.

He desperately needs the adoration of these people, but how much do you want to bet that he secretly despises them? I find it so amusing that these are the people he ends up with in the last years of his life.
