Another GOP Senate Candidate Makes Abortion Gaffe
Pennsylvania U.S. Senate candidate Tom Smith (R) "inadvertently waded into the war of words over rape and abortion on Monday -- the very issue his party has been trying to steer clear of these days," the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
"Asked about his stance on abortion, Smith said he opposes it, with no exceptions. He then seemed to compare a woman's decision to have a child outside of marriage to having one from rape."

(7,932 posts)how is having a baby outside of marriage like having a baby from a rape a bad thing? In his world view a women who is raped can not have an abortion so wouldn't he cheer if a women got pregnant by rape and decided to have the child?

Mark Scolforo, Associated Press: How would you tell a daughter or a granddaughter who, God forbid, would be the victim of a rape, to keep the child against her own will? Do you have a way to explain that?
Smith: I lived something similar to that with my own family. She chose life, and I commend her for that. She knew my views. But, fortunately for me, I didnt have to.. she chose they way I thought. No dont get me wrong, it wasnt rape.
Scolforo: ********Similar how?
Smith: Uh, having a baby out of wedlock.
Scolforo: Thats similar to rape?
Smith: No, no, no, but
put yourself in a fathers situation, yes. It is similar.**** But, back to the original, Im pro-life, period.

apparently he was just as distressed at his daughter getting pregnant out of wedlock as he would have been had she been raped.
or at least he'd like for people to believe that it's somehow on the same par. as far as troubling pregnancies go, y'know.
what a republican.
