A thousand-pound US bomb dropped during the Second World War has been discovered in Hamburg, Germany. Authorities ordered the evacuation of a densely-populated residential area of the city, affecting around 6,000 people.
A construction team digging in a densely-populated neighborhood in the northern German port city of Hamburg discovered a 1,000-pound (500 kilo) bomb on Wednesday.
Hamburg's fire department says the unexploded ordnance was a US-manufactured bomb dropped during World War II.

One doesn't want to fool around of course, but the reality is it didn't go off 70 years ago for a reason, and those reasons haven't gotten fixed being buried in the ground all that time. The explosive inside doesn't just "go off", and in fact was designed specifically not to do that. You can't do it with a match, or a torch or something. It will burn, but it won't particularly explode.
None the less, one would hate to be the person around the ONE TIME all hell broke loose.

There are industrial explosives that can be fairly dangerous as they age. Military ordnance is designed knowing that it could lie around for decades.
