We are thrilled, if this is what the workers want...
Details of settlement later, just wanted to let you know. It's been 10 days long. Hopefully, now the workers are back and assured of paychecks. I was getting worried for them...
I'll be back with more...off to get the papers...

(38,958 posts)I saw a Facebook post earlier on this and was pleased that a tentative settlement has been reached. It will of course have to go to the membership for a ratification vote and the devil is always in the details.

(63,912 posts)I think this union is the only one for supermarket workers in our state, perhaps in all New England where Stop and Shop has stores.
I worried that the poorer workers in the entry level jobs were suffering the most. I see young women working in the store when I shop and I think about how they made out, fed their kids and paid their bills, during this strike. But it seems that workers will keep their benefits and regular pay increases with this agreement.

(5,042 posts)But now I've discovered Market Basket's prices are too good.
I'll only use Stop and Shop as a convenience store now.

(2,367 posts)around us other than Stop and Shop, nice store but expensive.

(56,828 posts)Big Y has consistently good quality, but is more expensive than Stop & Shop. However, they do a good job buying from local farmers and dairies.
Shop Rite is generally lower quality than Stop & Shop and is a mixed bag on price - some more expensive and sometimes cheaper. The one closest to where I live was so crowded the past 10 days, local police had to be called to direct traffic.

(2,367 posts)Everyone I knew was honoring the picket line and was prepared to do so as long as it took.

(56,828 posts)had pretty much empty parking lots - I imagined the few cars that I saw were management coming in to try to run the stores and/or to dispose of spoiled produce and the other expired goods.
That said, I heard a Stop & Shop in Wethersfield, CT had to completely close because of a threat by somebody to gun down strikers.

(10,885 posts)I didn't drive up close to the store so couldn't be sure. Locals were bringing the striking workers coffee and food to sustain them on their picket line. I'd call it a pretty impressive strike - a lot of solidarity and support.
The only thing I missed was their gas station. We have enough comparable food stores nearby to pick up the slack.
Glad for the employees that they're back and with a good contract.

(63,912 posts)We will really need their gas station soon. Hubby is handicapped and I have problems pumping gas and this gas station has a handicap lane, altho you have to really lay on the horn to get someone to assist you which is rude if they are helping other customers, etc. So what do you do?
