Pentagon Warns That Trump Just Put US Troops In Danger
Defense officials warn that US troops could face consequences in the Middle East after Trump overruled the Pentagon and declared Irans Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a foreign terrorist group.
Politico reported:
The presidents move came despite Pentagon officials warnings that it could lead to retaliatory attacks against U.S. troops by Iranian-backed forces in the Middle East and threats from Iranian leaders that U.S. troops could face consequences.
Like most things Iran-related, DoD opposed, said a senior defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity to describe ongoing tensions between the White House National Security Council, which has mounted a maximum pressure campaign against Iran, and a Pentagon brass that has cautioned against unnecessary provocations.
Trump is placing US troops in danger
Trump felt emboldened after Iran didnt retaliate after the last Pentagon warning, so he is openly defying the advice of military leaders, who are in charge of keeping troops and the country protected. Trump has shown time and again that he is definitely not smarter than the generals. Iran has already retaliated, but it only seems like a matter of time before the big brain of Donald Trump gets soldiers killed.

(19,208 posts)I figured this is his "win in 2020" election strategy, only he doesn't want to get bogged down there for too long. Then it gets "counter-productive" for his "victory" strategy. I figure around the end of this year, the beginning of 2020, perhaps even on to next spring. He could saber rattle until then I suppose.
Either way, the asshole is going to get people killed for no good reason at all. The United States continues it's nosedive into the pits of world standing under Trump.

(2,412 posts)This is a very dangerous move. Trump wants to be a war president as a war with Iran would be the ultimate distraction from all Trumps domestic scandals. The American people tend to support their presidents once a war starts. Remember how the Peace Movement folded up after Bush started The War on Iraq?

Sounds like he's itching for a war and wants American deaths so he can proclaim himself a war hero.

(3,163 posts)Regardless of the wisdom of declaring a portion of Iran's military to be a terrorist organization, a move that I consider reckless and irresponsible, Politico said that, "Trump chose to overrule the Pentagon after..."
Whether we and Politico like it or not, Trump is Commander in Chief of the armed forces, and the commander does not "overrule" those who serve under him. He may be disregarding their advice, but doing so is very much within his wheelhouse, and this Jason Easley character is attributing a level of power to the military which it may have in countries like Egypt, but most certainly does not have in this nation.

(2,025 posts)The COI doesn't make these decisions without input from the Pentagon, and he has no basis to not follow their advice. The Pentagon makes these type of decisions, and in the event there is a deranged lunatic in the WH who wont listen, yes, he has to overrule the Pentagon.
JayhawkSD
(3,163 posts)The Pentagon does not make decisions to be overruled by the civilian government. The military (Pentagon) carries out decisions that are made by the civilian government. Period. End of story.
The president has every basis not to follow the advice given by the Pentagon, and the Pentagon is grossly out of line to be critical of any decision made by the president. My father served 43 years in the uniform of the armed forces of this nation, and I served six, and it is part of the Uniform Code of Military Justice that military people may not make public statements in contradiction of the civilian leadership of this nation.
I don't even know what your second sentence even means. It is gibberish. It is utterly absurd to suggest that, "the Pentagon makes these type of decisions," as that institution most certainly does nothing of the sort.
And as to, "in the event there is a deranged lunatic in the WH who wont listen, yes, he has to overrule the Pentagon." What? Who has to overrule what?
