But todays crack was way over the line. His audience laughed and applauded, probably not because they thought Mr. Romney was doing hilarious stand-up comedy, but because they knew exactly what he was up to.
The Romney campaigns response was especially lame. An adviser, Kevin Madden, said Mr. Romney was only referencing that Michigan, where he is campaigning today, is the state where he himself was born and raised. Right.
A spokesman for the Obama campaign, Ben LaBolt, pointed out that Mr. Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them. But, he added, Governor Romneys decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America.
Thats absolutely right. The birther charges are not really about trying to disqualify Mr. Obama from being president. The point is to remind voters that his father was Kenyan and that Mr. Obama is a man of mixed race with brown skin. Its racism, pure and simple.

Updated to add, Greg Sargent points out that the Romney campaign is trying hard to kill the story.
The Romney campaign is trying to shut down the story right now, releasing statements claiming that Romney has always maintained Obama was born in the United States and that Romney was merely making a paean to his birthplace.

Should have thought of that before hand, morons.
The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States, Romney adviser Kevin Madden said. He was only referencing that Michigan, where he is campaigning today, is the state where he himself was born and raised.
Spokesman Rick Gorka also downplayed the remarks in a gaggle with reporters after the event. Its settled, he said. Hes illustrating that he was born and raised here in Michigan.

(492 posts)There's no doubt that Romney is smart enough not to be sucked into the idiot birther movement. His "joke" just underscores the man's moral callousness. He's a whore looking for votes, any votes, even (maybe especially) the smug, self-assured racist votes of his idiot-birther audience.
He did say, didn't he, that he'll do what's necessary to get at least 51% of the vote?
