The NATIONAL EMERGENCIES ACT includes a provision to terminate the emergency declaration by joint resolution of Congress. If Trump declares one, Speaker Pelosi will call for a termination vote, which will pass. The Senate MUST then vote on the same resolution within three days, putting pressure on several Republican Senators who have publicly said a national emergency is a bad idea.

(3,022 posts)the Republicans haven't shown much independence from donald so screwed could well be what we are. On the other hand this might be the straw that gave the Senate Republicans a little backbone.

(2,778 posts)I realize that after all of Trumps abuses, this idea is way too when they go low, we go high, but I kinda hope that if he takes such dictatorial action the next Democratic President will propose legislation to prohibit this executive overreach rather than double down on it.
It would be awesome to deal immediately with climate policy and gun violence, but this is an example of Trump damaging democracy. We shouldnt do the same thing. Instead we should strip this power from the executive.
