I don't understand the deal...I was a battered woman...what if Peter said I will only drink 4 beers a nite instead of 18...which he did and which he reneged on...1 week later.....You can't trust these dicks...they operate on another planet....

(26,997 posts)and has shown him to be a weak man who was bested by what he fears most - a strong woman. It might also serve to maybe start an erosion of his hard core base. Maybe.
I suspect he's going to start massaging his wall criteria.

(14,767 posts)Pelosi and Schumer know that. Which is why they separated out border security from the spending bill. People are back to work, getting paid. That is something to celebrate. trump has backed down and in the meantime shived Graham in the back.

(38,444 posts)Just the same, we stood our ground and he caved. Sure, he could threaten to close the govt again but it will backfire on him. America got a practical demonstration of exactly what happens when the largest employer in this nation furloughs its workforce.

And that's 35 days Trump's leash-holders will have to convince him how incredibly damaging the shutdown has been for his popularity; not that it wasn't already shitty among non-shitty people anyway.
35 days for his team of surrogate thinkers to come up with a way for him to save his ugly face while making sure the country runs smoothly.
35 days for them to dream up a sour-grapes-like response like "I never really wanted a wall anyway..."
It's 35 days. It's a gift.

(3,131 posts)Besides, I think they wont shutdown again at least until the debt limit is reached.
I think they dont really care about the wall, just the fight and the dog whistle. Unless the base revolts now, theyll punt the wall fight until the 2020 campaign.
I predicted this was over for now once he caved in the SOTU and the RNC agreed not to primary Trump. Well see if I got the 2020 part right.

(888 posts)The 15th is another loser day for the rump. The hits on him just keep on coming closer and closer together in February. Major setbacks in July, steady playing defense all year. Gone January 13th, 2020, 1 year before he completes 1 stolen term in office.

(2,778 posts)The fact people can pay their bills for the moment. I don't know how it will playout from here but I'll take that little bit for the moment.

(33,916 posts)really hard: trump CAVED!!! But my concern is, trump still has the nuke codes. He's crazy AF. Let's stay calm because this is going to come up again in 3 weeks and it's almost as if they're goading him into not caving next time. Let's get him out of office first, then go full throttle on the taunting and jokes?

(1,345 posts)if it would benefit them to renege again, they would. But it wouldn't, so they won't. It was a blunder for them to get into this one, they're glad it's over.

(26,355 posts)All the concessions were from Trump and the GOP.
Mission accomplished, refusing to play along when the MAGAts try hostage-taking.
And I'm betting the GOP won't have the stomach for a second shutdown - they came out of this one smelling like they went swimming in a septic tank.

(42,663 posts)Also, Mueller is still working like mad, Spanky is going to look like a fool giving his little speech, he's going to have to declare a state of emergency to try this again and it would be very, very stupid and opposed by all sides, and the world just might be getting a clue that we are fighting against him and he won't represent this country forever.
I don't think anyone is really trusting and stopping any of the work against him. Just the opposite.
And NANCY! We've needed someone to give us this boost and that woman is a leader.

(11,767 posts)Trump owned the shut down. He and the GOP got clobbered for it. Any leverage Trump had before the shutdown to try to get his wall (which was very little) is gone. Any future shutdown will be squarely on the shoulders of Trump and the GOP. They will not get funding for a wall, ever.
While it is true that Trump and the GOP do not have a real moral compass, this situation showed that their game did not really work. There will be less tolerance for their bullshit the next time around and Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, know exactly how to play their hand.

No one trusts him about what he promises, but in this case he blinked. Of course, he made it look like a win for him but he didnt win anything at all.
No one trusts him. But its a long game. This just one move on the board.

(56,243 posts)and workers trhough another shut down, and the courts won't go along with him declaring a national emergency after 35 days and then 21 more days. If it was an emergency it should have been declared from the jump.
If he tries it it will be seen as dereliction of duty.
He lost. He's just got to deal with it.

(30,947 posts)In three weeks, he will pretend any extra money for national security is for the wall - even though it specifically won't be - and pivot into some big distraction.
Maybe that's the day the smirking boy and his buddies from the Catholic high school will get their presidential awards for surviving their encounter with the Native American protester.
