then it seems necessary that they first pass legislation that funding the Government can never be attached to auxiliary legislation, that is, other laws that any Party and/or the President wants to pass.
Take away the gun and the threat goes away.

(16,423 posts)Democrats would get an end of the shutdown.
Republicans would get an end of the shutdown, plus the wall.

(2,787 posts)and if Trump and republicans take this shutdown far enough, there might be and appetite in this country for one.

(10,167 posts)Call for an up or down vote, after a healthy debate, on the clean House Bill.
If the bill fails, it fails and both sides continue to negotiate. If it passes, Trump has the option to veto. No one can be certain WTF Trump would actually do. Trump loves bullying and making threats he has no intention of following through on. If he actually vetos, try to override, and if that fails, rebegin negotiations to reopen the government.

no_hypocrisy
(46,564 posts)It could be used to fix, strengthen existing barriers or to pay for surveyors.
But you don't exclusively dedicate it to "The Wall".

(10,167 posts)Adding funds to increase technological monitoring and manpower if needed to areas where physical barriers would be ineffective, cost prohibitive to build and maintain, and essentially unnecessary in the first place. Adding some barriers where actually needed.
A continuous 2000 mile wall is unnecessary, environmentally damaging, ugly, and wasteful to build and maintain. Monitoring for activity like tunnels in certain areas seems appropriate.
Also- Seeking asylum is legal and must remain so. Threatening to pull economic aid from our Southern neighbors will only make things worse.

(8,420 posts)How do you compromise with people (Trump) that only see this as a black-and-white wall-no wall issue?
You cant really compromise with someone that wants an actual wall. For me, there is no compromisable position that includes a wall.
Freethinker65
(10,167 posts)Of course to Trump, it meant a WALL....but even Trump recently has been using the term Border Security (which is Trump' s BS way of trying to fix his own fucking mess). And Trump and the GOP love saying things like The Democrats want open borders and like "catch and release" while the Democrats have NEVER been against increased border security and have been approving increased funding all along.
The Republicans will claim they forced Democrats to increase Border Security funding, and the Democrats will crow Trump did not get his wall. The compromise will return it back to the way it was before Trump fucked things up.
