Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is recovering in a wheelchair from a recent bicycling accident, calling the ordeal very painful.
In her first public appearance since the accident, DeVos said Thursday that she broke her pelvis and hip socket. She underwent surgery earlier this month.
Very painful, she said. But it will heal. I just have to stay off of it for quite a few weeks, so Im getting around with other means.
The Education Department had said earlier only that she had broken a bone while road biking and would rest and recover at home while staying in touch with the office, without offering more details.

(999 posts)And getting back on her feet will be no picnic. I have enough empathy to wish her a good and complete recovery.
Now I know she is wealthy woman and can afford the medical and rehab care even if she isn't using the federal health insurance available to her. Oh that everyone had the available to them. And paid medical leave at their place of employment.

Secondly, all snark aside, I hope for her sake and overall well-being that she gets a correctly-educated physician to work on her, and not one of her own students.
Just sayin.

(22,759 posts)oh, that's bad, that's painful... she really should take a couple years off to heal... broken bones are tough yes, yes... she really does need lots of time to heal... we better let her have lots of time away from her strenuous job to heal ...so bad tsk,tsk

(31,261 posts)I suffered a very minor case of the hip socket injury as a child, my sense is she will have that for life, maybe modern medicine and her being rich will yield better results for her.
I wiped out on a bike in college, tried to turn too fast on a wet pavement. I had no control at all over what my body hit, I was bloodied and barely conscious, fortunately I was near the medical school and some people from there rushed to me to aid me. A bike wipeout on an icy or rain slicked road is no picnic, a person is going to hit the ground violently.
