Bring beer, make friends: New congressman tries to bring 6-pack to House floor

There are few smiles coming out of Washington D.C. these days, but Rep. Joe Cunningham managed to prompt a few Friday when he tried to walk onto the House floor with a six-pack of beer.

The newly elected Democrat from South Carolina didn’t quite make it that far, stopped before he could enter.

The beer was a gift for Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., a co-chair of the House Small Brewers Caucus, Cunningham said on Twitter.

“Making friends when you’re a freshman is hard and I thought I’d grease the skids with some Lowcountry beer,” Cunningham said on Twitter. He added that DeFazio eventually received the beer. “Can I join the beer caucus now?”

Virginia has over 285 breweries now and law makers are rushing to change laws to be more favorable to brewing.
