When will Falwell Jr. and Franklin Graham ever be called out for what they are? Heartless grifters.

(57,235 posts)Lesson of the widow's mite
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesson_of_the_widow's_mite
A bronze mite, also known as a Lepton (meaning small), minted by Alexander Jannaeus, King of Judaea, 103 - 76 B.C.. and still in circulation at the time of Jesus[1]
The Lesson of the widow's mite is presented in the Synoptic Gospels (Mark 12:41-44, Luke 21:1-4), in which Jesus is teaching at the Temple in Jerusalem. The Gospel of Mark specifies that two mites (Greek lepta) are together worth a quadrans, the smallest Roman coin. A lepton was the smallest and least valuable coin in circulation in Judea, worth about six minutes of an average daily wage.[2]
Contents
"He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, 'Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.'[3]
The traditional interpretation of this story tends to view it as contrasting the conduct of the scribes with that of the widow, and encouraging generous giving; often read with 2 Corinthians 9 , "...for God loves a cheerful giver."
However, Addison Wright observes that there is no indication given of the widow's demeanor or frame of mind. He points out that earlier, in Mark 7:10-13, Jesus takes to task the scribes and Pharisees for an hypocrisy that would impoverish parents.[4]
For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or mother shall die.' Yet you say, 'If a person says to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is qorban"'(meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things."
In the passage immediately prior to Jesus taking a seat opposite the Temple treasury, he is portrayed as condemning religious leaders who feign piety, accept honor from people, and steal from widows. "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation."[5]
The same religious leaders who would reduce widows to poverty also encourage them to make pious donations beyond their means. In Wright's opinion, rather than commending the widow's generosity, Jesus is condemning both the social system that renders her poor, and "...the value system that motivates her action, and he condemns the people who conditioned her to do it."[4]
Quentin Quesnell sees in this account "...a rebuke and rejection of the wrongdoers."[6] Quesnell notes that if Jesus' statement was to be seen as an endorsement of the widow's action, it bears none of the usual comments, such as "Go, and do likewise."
The account of the Widow's Mite is followed by, "As he was making his way out of the temple area one of his disciples said to him, "Look, teacher, what stones and what buildings!" Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? There will not be one stone left upon another that will not be thrown down."[7]

(1,376 posts)Apparently Mr. Falwell missed the lesson in Luke 10:30-37...
And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
Mr. Falwell is no more a Christian than my spaniel is an astronaut.

(5,502 posts)But she never turned a hungry person away. I have always found that those who know what it's like to need are more apt to truly give. Because to truly give means that you do without.
A rich man giving extra doesn't truly give because there is no sacrifice.
Full disclosure: I'm an atheist. But I think as a human, it's important to take care of each other.

(12,158 posts)21 And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites.[a] 3 So He said, Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; 4 for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.
Poor people can be the most generous people. Rich people give as Jesus said a pittance of what they have while when the poor give it is often all they have. I and others I know have experienced the generosity of the poor and have paid it forward.

In all likelihood, if all the current poor people were wiped out, it would result in a loss of jobs, resulting in another group of poor people.
He lives in his own small world when he thinks that poor people don't give to charity or create jobs.

Besides, since when is simply creating a job something so magnificent that it becomes a Christian parable? Is it a GOOD job? Does it pay fairly? Does it abuse the worker? These employers think a job is the end all and be all. The poor worker still has to do all the labor. It's not like they get their wages for free. It's not like the boss won't fire the guy if he feels like it.
The rich do not give as high a percentage of their wealth to charity as the poor and the middle class do. It has been documented over and over again and yet the supposed Christian lies and lies about it. What a dick.

(6,401 posts)Long story short, they tried to put a sympathetic spin on the Bakker's. But what intrigued me was how, Jim Bakker was the founder of a nothing show that other evangelists didn't think would go anywhere called the 700 Club. Pat Roberston basically strong armed them out of it.
They left and long story short, were successful...apparently even the theme park they built was turning a profit, a small one, but still a profit. That's when Jerry Falwell Sr. approached them about helping them out....and slowly began to take over and act like a vulture capitalist. Finally turning on the Bakker's and doing them in.
As for Jr....the apple doesn't fall from the tree with these types.

(12,677 posts)Wealthy people - with the exception of the few wealthy people who decide to give it all to charity when they go, most of who grew up in or were exposed to poverty - tend to use charity as ether a tax dodge or a status statement.
Poor people give with an awareness that survival is based on community. A poor person will also hire others at a greater employee to task basis - and also pay a greater labor cost hiring others than wealthy people, just in a different form (primarily barter or under the table) than a wealthy person.
Look at it this way- giving $20 a day to a housebound neighbor or relative to watch your kids and feed them breakfast and lunch while you go to a minimum wage job every day is like bringing home $1k (after taxes) a day and hiring someone $500 a day to watch your kids while you're away.
Most better off people won't pay that much of an income/cost per day for, say, a nanny and as many other "essential" staff, documented or not, they would want to hire. Make $10k a day, are you going to hire employees at $5k a day, if it wasn't going to seriously save you in taxes?
