John Podhoretz Isnt Buying Nick Ayers Reason for Not Taking WH Chief of Staff Post: Thats a Lot of Crapby Tamar Auber | Dec 9th, 2018, 9:28 pm
Editor of Commentary and New York Post columnist John Podhoretz is not buying Nick Ayers claim that he wants to spend more time with family and therefore will not be taking over White House chief-of-staff John Kellys job.
-snip-
However, speaking on MSNBC, Podhoretz made it clear he thinks that is not the entire story.
Its very striking Nick Ayers said to Trump, I dont want it. I mean he said I could stay for three months. I have twins and I have to go back to Georgia. Thats a lot of crap, Podhoretz said.
Then. he said this: I dont know Nick Ayers. Im not saying hes a liar, but people dont get offered the White House chief of staff job very often. He was the vice presidents chief of staff. This is the center of the action. This is the red-hot center of world politics and world power. And he is going back to Georgia after being the chief of staff to the less important guy? I am not buying it.
Podhoretz also suggested Ayers is just trying to get out before the storm hits the White House.

(22,056 posts)I've read his columns for many years since he used to be the editor for the NY Post. Although he's a partisan, he's intelligent and he writes well.
In the Era of Trump, he's become quite a critic of this administration. I concur with his analysis of the Chief-of-Staff story that Ayers is trying to float. Anyone in this administration with any brain cells left must know that the iceberg is right in front of the ship of state.
Who would want that job just when the legal and political perils are coming to a head? It will be interesting to see who takes the job. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Trump decides he doesn't need a CoS. So far, he hasn't availed himself of the benefits the position can offer an effective president.
Interesting factoid: Podhoretz was an associate producer (or some similar title) for "The West Wing" and advised the writers and producers about plot lines and character development. I've met him a couple of times and found him to be friendly and engaging. Still, he's a Republican!
