Is this normal procedure? I don't care all that much but I really don't remember this happening for past presidents.

(81,759 posts)George W. Bush declared a national day of mourning to mark the death of former president Gerald Ford at 93. The day of mourning was marked on the day of Ford's funeral at Washington's National Cathedral on Jan. 2, 2007. The federal government was shuttered and financial markets were closed.
Two years earlier in 2004, Bush ordered a tribute to former president Ronald Reagan who died at 93 at his Bel Air home after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's. Flags were lowered to half-staff for 30 days across the U.S. and at U.S. installations worldwide. The day of mourning was held on June 11, the day of Reagan's state funeral in Washington. Federal agencies were also closed for the day.
Even former president Richard Nixon, who resigned in disgrace in the face of impeachment in 1974, was recognized with a similar tribute upon his death at 81 in 1994. President Bill Clinton declared a day of national mourning. Flags at government buildings and U.S. embassies around the world flew at half-staff for 30 days.

(28,101 posts)from the time the news broke until the day after the funeral. Stores were open on Saturday (they never were on Sundays back then) but there weren't many shoppers & everything was closed on Monday, the day of the funeral.
But that was different as it was such a shock to everyone.

(27,875 posts)It seems very strange that the Post Office would suspend deliveries for a day right in the middle of the holidays, but it won't really affect me.

Know how LBJ's funeral was handled. Maybe you can find out why a person asked a question.

(31,261 posts)But not LBJ, or Ford. My parents had a picture of Kennedy hanging in our house when I was growing up, years after he had been killed. Their feelings about him were strong, so to me it was rational to ask. Some people actually took the time to give answers, so I found out before your post and another one.

Way to piss people off in honor of Bush. It shouldn't be done for any president--people still count on things arriving by mail when they're supposed to.
