(58,785 posts)Well, they've been trying that for years and have failed for years.
When she becomes speaker once again after 8 years, she will have made history yet again as the first person in our history to be her colleagues' choice after such a gap. It's not that we don't have other good people, it's that she's quite remarkable. Steny Hoyer, who hoped and prepared for years to eventually succeed her, is committed to another demanding position, house majority leader.

(7,541 posts)working to neuter your new Congress. It happens every session Dems take control. Go back to 1980...your trickle down bullshit won't fly here. The IDC disbanded in New York because they were thrown out of office.

(54,410 posts)Over Thanksgiving (we have our big dinner on Friday, since it's no holiday here, and we all still work for a living), our younger daughter and her 6-month-old were here along with her boyfriend, whose birthday it is tomorrow, so they stayed the night but took off back for Frankfurt this morning. We also had what seemed like the UN. Six friends from Holland drove over, our Austrian neighbor, and people from all over northern Germany. The turkey was the size of an ostrich. Half the people who came bought salads and/or dessert (the Dutch brought cheese, of course!).
If you're hungry, stop by. We have enough leftovers to feed the entire Chinese army for a week!

(20,252 posts)That's right, it's a stateside observance.
Little one is already six months!
The Europeans and their 'descendants' are into having enuff food for any occasion, even everyday!
When any of our parents came from CT or FLA to visit, us'un females would carefully and methodically plot what we would serve for each daily meal. Sheesh! Visiting our Carpathian, Slovak, Swedish, Italian, etc. family or friends--they'd greet you quickly while taking your wraps then ask what they could get you to drink or eat! You know what I mean. 😄🍺🍹🍷☕🍕🍗🍤🍝🍧🍰🍮🍩🍪🍨
Be well all,
💙
Made me laugh and that's always a good thing. Particularly in the times we are a'living.

(14,764 posts)it aims to neuter the democratically controlled congress to push a conservative agenda until yhe republicans gain control again.
In this sense, bi-partisan is another word for surrender. I'm all for meaningful give and take, but they want to negotiate between a complete ban on abortion, lgbt rights, and zero txes on the wealthy and a plan that is nearly so.

(14,764 posts)So did the house and senate. The gop just cackled with every mile they gained, and still wouldn't deal because it might make the dems look good. They ended up with a perfect gop health insurance reform bill without a single vote on their side, then spent 8 years killing it.
F' em until they put somebody reasonable in to deal with. Anf double dry f joe lieberman. Any D that throws in with him is an asshat.

(10,272 posts)Yeah. Like Radical Centrists who believe the bi-partisian fucking over of America is waaaayy more politically tolerable than the 'partisan' fight between Crime and Not-Crime; between MORE FUCKING and UNfucking.
Break the gridlock my ass. If these people want the logjam fixed, they will give back the money they were paid to act like logs.

(118,295 posts)The final so-called "Break the Gridlock" objective is to require an absolute majority of all House members (not just of members present) to elect a chair
Let's contemplate the actual likely effect of these rules on a narrowly divided House:
(1) The chair is removed
(2) A fraction of the House is absent
(3) Among members actually ever present, there is no absolute majority of House members (not just of members present) behind the election of any particular chair
(4) The House effectively ceases to function
Here are the BS "Break the Gridlock" rules: https://gottheimer.house.gov/uploadedfiles/break_the_gridlock_packet.pdf

(42,641 posts)And these self-named problem solvers are not at all progressive.
When the GOP controls the House, the unwritten Hastert rule decrees that only Bills that can be passed with GOP support only will be considered.
And the GOP has made it clear that to them, compromise means accepting only GOP ideas.
