A Wisconsin school district is considering what consequences students should face after an alarming photograph surfaced, supposedly of the male students of the class of 2019. The image, tweeted from an account that has since been made private, allegedly shows dozens of Baraboo High School students at their junior prom giving the Nazi salute.
A screenshot was shared by Twitter user @CarlySidey, with details later posted by VICE contributor Jules Suzdaltsev. The account that originally posted the image, @GoBaraboo, is now listed as protected, meaning only permitted users are allowed to see its posts.
The Barbaroo School District has yet to issue a response, but their official Twitter account retweeted a message from School District Administrator Lori Mueller that addressed the issue, and it appears that they are taking the matter very seriously, even considering legal action, should it be deemed appropriate.
Law&Crime reached out to Mueller for additional comment. A phone call to Barbaroo High School was directed to the voicemail of Principal Glenn Bildsten, but so far there has been no response to a message left by Law&Crime.

(26,060 posts)action wouldn't run afoul of the first amendment but nothing stopping the school from expelling them.

(707 posts)No that cant be allowed to happen. As disgusting as the salute is nobody should even think about legal action. Freedom of expression means just that even its ugliest forms. Imagine a group of kids doing the raised fist and some school considered legal action. Call it out use your voice but no action of any kind should be taken.

(2,120 posts)The raised fist by a bunch of black kids is a sign for social justice and should be encouraged. The nazi salute is plainly pure hatred and hate speech legal sanctions are appropriate. You can't equate the two.

Some images are advocating pure hate. At the least, each kid but the one that did not actively participate and the one that hid to avoid being in the photo should get a written letter of reprimand in their school records and should be suspended from school for two weeks. I say the same for a group giving the finger, holding up a noose, or raising a clenched fist if it was done out of malice. Ignorance should not preempt being held responsible. Two kids seemed to have known it was wrong, maybe a few others that could not react fast enough, the ones with raised salutes need to be punished.
If a student walked down a shool hallway cursing with every other word, that student would most likely be suspended or expelled from school. Yet, cursing is covered by the First Amendment.
