action is needed in light of the Pennsylvania ruling. I feel like I am in the 60's again.

(92,492 posts)Suggest we pursue two courses of action. One! the DNC allocates some of their contributions for this, and two go to the courts in an accelerated way
The civil right act made this garbage illegal

(15,438 posts)Courts are bought and paid for by the Fascists in this country, and these fascists want President Obama OUT.
But he has ONE power they're terrified of: his power to declare a state of emergency and to declare martial law that would suspend all elections until he lifts the declaration.
He doesn't have to do it. Just do as Paulson did - threaten it.

Didn't know that? Don't feel badly. NO ONE knew it because NO ONE made a single peep. NO ONE.
So, in your opinion, you believe marching outside in droves against voter suppression in 19 states while the courts are stacked in favor of Fascist America is useful, achievable, and helps to maintain democracy, will do more than just give people like Sheldon Adelson and the Koch Bros a nice laugh, do you? Aw.
Americans LOVE to make fun of the French, and they LOVE war with other countries, but when it's time for the rubber to meet the road, Americans are wusses in heart and soul compared to the French who overthrew their oligarchy in favor of democracy. They understood it takes more than whining about the loss of our rights to make a change.
Dutch saying roughly translated: weak doctors make for stinking wounds. This is what you're advocating. Koch Bros & Co don't conform to our little laws because laws can be changed with the right amount of money.

(19,497 posts)First of all, I seriously doubt President Obama would even contemplate such a thing.
Second, I don't think the military would contemplate such a thing either.
Third, if anyone did seriously contemplate it (I don't count you a serious) they would be hounded out of whatever office they occupied by congress, the courts, the press and the people.
Since your fantasy is doomed to remain just a fantasy what would your next step be?
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)CLEARLY stated THREATEN TO DECLARE. How could you have miss it? It was in the post title for chrissakes
Second, the sitting president already has the power (duh). Just as Paulson told the Democrats in the House in closed door meetings if they didn't pass TARP they'd declare Martial Law - and got it passed a.s.a.p. - why can't this president threaten with the same stick if states don't drop their voter suppression tactics? Don't believe me? Have a look what Democrat Rep Brad Sherman said on the House floor in October 2008:
Third, yeah, I know it's a fantasy since Americans are too scared of real change to do anything seriously about removing the yoke we have hanging around our necks.
What would my next step be? Well, since marching by the hundreds of thousands only resulted in physical and mental injuries by tax-payer funded riot police with military weapons and nothing else; since courts are actively aiding and abetting Fascist America's birth as we speak, since the majority of Americans are too afraid of real change . . . use the THREAT of Martial Law, just like Bush, to make Corporate America back the eff down. That, too, was made clear in my original post, and again, I'm sorry you missed it.

It needs to be an all out effort by masses of Democratic Activist.
Marches won't work for this because I can't see it actually forcing the bigots to do anything.
What can we do NOW?

(30,404 posts)While we are planning to march, Democrats better get every person a valid Voter ID and get those citizens to the polls.
I say, let them see grandmothers with the Marchers and in their wheel chairs.
Let them see people of all colors marching too.
If there are only "people of color " marching, that won't work.
It would be extremely important for it to be a Rainbow of colors. I remember Jessie Jackson had a very effective huge group of activist in the "Rainbow Coalition."
Does anyone know if Rev. Al checks into DU?
He would be the person to organize it.
Let me know your thoughts ~

(15,438 posts)This will scare the oligarchs enough to back the eff down with their voter suppression tactics, and it will put the judges on alert.
This is clearly a national security risk against the American people. If Bush could do it to force Congress to pass TARP for the banksters, then surely President Obama can use it to protect the rights of the American people.

Only solution: President Obama threatens to declare Martial Law and puts all those fascists on notice - including bought and owned judges. They wanna play hardball? No ball is harder than Martial Law.

(26,219 posts)Like we have forced on other countries.
That would be the awesomeness on Corbett's corrupt regime to boot - UN forces standing watch in every polling station in PA on November 6th.
sweetapogee
(1,168 posts)UN forces at our polling places help dems win the election? Who is going to say "I have the authority to invite the UN to observe our election and have decided to do just that!" Answer: no one. May I say plainly that this is a very dumb idea although the feeling of outrage is one that I share.
Ruby the Liberal
(26,219 posts)It would be further visibility on the corruption that is the Corbett administration.
On top of everything else this crook has done, he was AG from 2008-2010 and SAT on the Sandusky investigation, assigning one sole PA State Trooper to investigate it part time through those years. He was running for Governor and didn't want to make waves in the Penn State fan base/community. It wasn't until the new AG took office after the 2010 election that the case was put on the front burner, investigations launched and Grand Juries sat.
sweetapogee
(1,168 posts)as I agree that the ID thing sucks but voter ID and Penn State football are two different things and it's a little difficult for me to imagine that the voters in PA are going to want to see the UN at their polling places. Penn State fans, and we have them by the truckload are pissed at the NCAA.
We have as you know in the commonwealth both dems and pukes observing the voting, at least we do at my polling place. Here in the NE coal fields I think any outside presence regardless of party would be viewed with outrage. Maybe outside of this area it wouldn't cause a fuss but not here.
Take care my friend.
Ruby the Liberal
(26,219 posts)And it isn't the Dems that would object - it is the insane Ron Paul posse in the "T". Makes it all the more attractive to me.
I'll even go so far as to say that I would pay good money to have the Corbett administration embarassed by poll watchers. You say this isn't about football - well, it never was. It has ALWAYS been about political expediency and corruption with that crew. His phoning in the Sandusky investigation was never about football either. It was all about keeping the campaign coffers full.

(17,651 posts)you do not change the rules just before an election, much less a Presidential election.
They also rearrange voting districts for the same reasons.
Republicans are doing this simply to suppress Democratic votes in strategic places. Voting is not a privilege it is a right in this country and if anything, it should be easier for voters to exercise their rights.
They will cheat, lie and steal what ever they can get away with.
muriel_volestrangler
(101,405 posts)The UN does not get involved in the minutiae of voting laws in countries. The real effect of anyone 'taking this to the United Nations' would be to enrage the anti-UN types, make sure they turn out to vote for Romney, over the whole of the USA, in November, and hand Romney an ideal series of ads about how Democrats are "un-American" and want to hand control of the very basic part of the country - voting - to the UN.
I can't think of a worse move than trying to bring the UN into it. Try appealing to higher American courts.

(375 posts)I can see a problem with the Romney folks not letting elderly folks vote if they don't have ID. If the name is on the voting Roll they should be allowed to vote even with out an ID. The UN is Neutral and would be a good observer to make sure the election is not stolen like 2000.
