My friend lost his re-election bid

He’s a friend of 28 years and a good person. He’s a retired scientist, having previously worked for medical labs in San Diego and Hawaii. More recently, retired from his life’s work, he worked on the parks commission in a small Oregon city to which he had retired, and when a vacancy came up on the city council he was chosen by the council unanimously to fill the spot.

He ran yesterday for a four year term. A former mayor came out of retirement to run against my friend. He said my friend would bring “California values” to the city; homeless people will be camping on your front yard; your taxes will triple to pay for all the ‘illegals’ my friend will invite to the city after he makes it a ‘sanctuary city’.

He was attacked for running a TV ad in which he said he wanted to make the city a better place for everyone. My friend wanted to build more affordable housing; to build a new medical clinic/urgent care center; and provide some form of public transit (shuttle vans?) for the citizens without cars to get to work, shopping, doctors appointments. The complaint: “Why would someone running for city council run a TV ad?”

Out of about a thousand votes cast, he lost by around 140 votes.

Perhaps his being openly gay had something to do with the old timers voting against him.

Just venting

However, the retired mayor made the race about FEAR. And people is a scared of things. People, healthcare, workers. They just be scared about their own shadows.
