(14,565 posts)Nobody wants to hear that but gerrymandering makes it true. It's incredible we have such a low net pickup given maybe +9 points nationally.
In a more balanced terrain like 2020 in a presidential year some of these new pickups are automatically gone, like the Oklahoma seat, etc.

(5,330 posts)That could be the real coup of the story tonight.
They could play a big role in de-gerrymandering many of those battleground states come 2020, making them more naturally in play.

(1,934 posts)Dem govs with GOP controlled state houses can blunt the GOP effort to gerrymander but is unlikely to completely fix it, since most maps are drawn by the legislatures and approved by the Governors.

(130,391 posts)which appears to have happened here in PA, it is possible that the logjam will be partially broken to fix gerrymandering in general - and notably too at the state level, which is also what has killed us (D)s here in PA. As it is, our state district map had been to court a few times and redrawn and the current map was only left in place after that because we had an (R) Governor at the time. Now with a (D), we can hopefully push to fix the state map. It won't be easy but we'll have to keep pushing for it.

(130,391 posts)so there may be changes to come. Holder's group will keep pushing for it.
And note that the WH will probably double triple and quadruple down on the crazy stuff, so that might have some impact as well.

(58,785 posts)win more governorships to get reapportionment out of Republican hands. At least the house victories will help tremendously.
We'll be learning what's happened in state legislatures, especially all those Republican trifectas. I just read that CO's senate has turned blue, guessing their house will have remained blue.
In MN, the DFL just got a majority in the house, senate remains red. Unfortunately, though WI replaced that fascist Walker with a Democratic governor, Republicans retain control of the legislature.
And so on.
