Tara Fares, shot to death in early October.
Rafeef al-Yaseri, known as the "Barbie of Iraq," was killed inside her Baghdad home on August 16. Al-Yaseri was a plastic surgeon and organized national programs specializing in medical affairs for women. She helped women disfigured by war wounds.
One week later, Rasha al-Hassan, owner and manager of Viola Beauty Center in Baghdad, was found dead inside her home.

(113,303 posts)By day I live in terror
By night I live in fright
For as long as I can remember
A lady don't go out alone at night, no no
A lady don't go out alone at night
But I don't accept the verdict
It's a wrong one anyway
âCause nowadays a woman
Can't even go out in the middle of the day, safely
Can't go out in the middle of the day
And so we've got to fight back
In large numbers
Fight back, I can't make it alone
Fight back, in large numbers
Together we can make a safe home
Together we can make a safe home
Women all around the world
Every color, religion and age
One thing weâve got in common
We can all be battered and raped
We can all be battered and raped
Some have an easy answer
They buy a lock and they live in a cage
But my fear is turning to anger
And my anger's turning to rage
And I won't live my life in a cage, no!
By day I live in terror
By night I live in fright
For as long as I can remember
A lady don't go out at night
Fight back

Lyrics by Tena Clark
Music by Tena Clark/Tim Heintz
Intro-
I raise my arms to the sky
On my knees I pray
Im not afraid anymore
I will walk through that door
Walk, dance, rise
Walk, dance, rise
I can see a world where we all live
Safe and free from all oppression
No more rape or incest, or abuse
Women are not a possession
Youve never owned me, dont even know me Im not invisible, Im simply wonderful I feel my heart for the first time racing I feel alive, I feel so amazing
I dance cause I love
Dance cause I dream
Dance cause Ive had enough
Dance to stop the screams
Dance to break the rules
Dance to stop the pain
Dance to turn it upside down
Its time to break the chain, oh yeah
Break the Chain
Dance, rise
Dance, rise
In the middle of this madness, we will stand I know there is a better world Take your sisters & your brothers by the hand Reach out to every woman & girl
This is my body, my bodys holy
No more excuses, no more abuses
We are mothers, we are teachers,
We are beautiful, beautiful creatures
I dance cause I love
Dance cause I dream
Dance cause Ive had enough
Dance to stop the screams
Dance to break the rules
Dance to stop the pain
Dance to turn it upside down
Its time to break the chain, oh yeah
Break the Chain, oh yeah
Break the Chain
Dance Break Inst.
Dance, rise
Dance, rise
Sister wont you help me, sister wont you rise x4
Dance, rise
Dance, rise
Sister wont you help me, sister wont you rise x4
This is my body, my bodys holy
No more excuses, no more abuses
We are mothers, we are teachers,
We are beautiful, beautiful creatures
I dance cause I love
Dance cause I dream
Dance cause Ive had enough
Dance to stop the screams
Dance to break the rules
Dance to stop the pain
Dance to turn it upside down
Its time to break the chain, oh yeah
Break the Chain, oh yeah
Break the Chain
(Repeat chorus)

(5,607 posts)I have been one of those "most men". I was raised to treat all women with just ordinary courtesy and decency; and I assumed that most men were raised the same way. I have assumed that most men don't engage in aggressive behavior toward women. My assumptions may be right, but I'm seeing here, in discussions like this one, that it's just not good enough; we need to understand, as you say, how much women's behavior is rule by fear.
I'm stepping gingerly here; I have not walked in the shoes of the victims, and never will. Thanks for your post.

(4,033 posts)He was an unabashed liberal from the get-go. When I was very young, maybe 7 years old? He and I were going somewhere at night. He saw a man beating on a woman. I don't remember how he got them separated but somehow he got the guy on one side of the car and the woman on the other, opened the door and told her to get in, and then drove off with her. I don't remember the details, where we were going, why we were going, how he got them separated, or what happened afterwards, but I never forgot him getting a woman who was being abused out of the situation.
I've always tried to live up to the examples he set for me, one of which was respect everyone. He was a very liberal Christian minister and while he wasn't a Bible thumper by any stretch of the imagination he was a true Christian in that he did his best to follow the teachings of Christ - as in 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you', the parable of the Good Samaritan, and so on. And we learned that if we wanted to stay out of trouble we had better learn to follow them as well.
What I never understood is WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG with some men who think that they can get away with any damn thing that please? When I read some of the stories that have been posted here, when I read about Kavanaugh and the Rethugs ignoring the accusations and actually blaming the accusers for daring to speak out it makes me physically sick to my stomach. When I read about 200K rape kits that nobody has had the time to process I have to decide that the human race might not deserve to survive.

(11,885 posts)By attacking them , the attacked victim , once again , then claiming they're the victims Any woman standing behind people that do this are hurting not only themselves, but all others who are targeted to be sexually attacked, and has suffered the consequences, instead of the male attackers. Now trump and the gop continue protecting them and attacking the women over and over again. As long as women don't unite against them , this will just continue. It will only get worse as long as they're allowed to get away with this, like with kavanaugh. Women are verbally assaulted now while people like kavanaugh are given more power over women. Resist and vote people. This will never be acceptable.

(4,690 posts)I draw a line down the middle of a chalkboard, sketching a male symbol on one side and a female symbol on the other. Then I ask just the men: What steps do you guys take, on a daily basis, to prevent yourselves from being sexually assaulted?
At first there is a kind of awkward silence as the men try to figure out if theyve been asked a trick question. The silence gives way to a smattering of nervous laughter. Occasionally, a young a guy will raise his hand and say, I stay out of prison. This is typically followed by another moment of laughter, before someone finally raises his hand and soberly states, Nothing. I dont think about it.
Then I ask the women the same question. What steps do you take on a daily basis to prevent yourselves from being sexually assaulted? Women throughout the audience immediately start raising their hands. As the men sit in stunned silence, the women recount safety precautions they take as part of their daily routine:
