https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/technology/2018/10/08/betrayal-beyond-words-far-right-melts-down-over-taylor-swifts-endorsement-democrats/The news caught 4chan and Reddit trolls mid-post. On the pro-Trump r/The_Donald board, someone had just written out a sexual fantasy in which Swift and Kanye West hooked up because Trump being the best president is actually something they both agree on. The author edited the post minutes later: NVM didnt realize Taylor sold out to the left.
Missives about Swifts perceived betrayal of conservatism clogged far-right message boards. Some simply refused to believe what she had written to her 112 million Instagram followers Sunday evening a 400-word condemnation of systemic racism, homophobia and GOP Senate candidate Rep. Marsha Blackburn of her home state of Tennessee, complete with her endorsement of Democrats Phil Bredesen, the partys Senate candidate, and Rep. Jim Cooper.

Suffice to a say, a meme of Pepe the Frog openly weeping with a gun to his head appeared in one of the most popular threads, and more or less summed up the mood.

(58,785 posts)she posted on Sundday, according to Vote.org.
In her state, of 5,183 voter registrations in Tennessee this month (October), at least 2,144 occurred after Swift posted her statement to Instagram on Sunday, said Guthrie. There were 2,811 new Tennessee voter registrations in September.
Trump says he likes her music about 25% less now.

Hope so!!

(32,093 posts)Which is why you are seeing this campaign against her. They're scared shitless that she's going to sway a good chunk of her enormous fan base.

(386 posts)Young voters nearly always underperform; we don't know how many fewer would have turned out for Obama and Hillary absent Katy Perry. She worked her ass off, I believe pop singers with passionate young fans in those numbers have to help, and I give her giant props.
Katy helped, and now Taylor's gonna help... the howls of pain and angst now coming from the right tells us they know that, too.
In both cases we'll never know how many additional votes they deliver. But we need and want every Katy and Taylor we can get.

(14,275 posts)Young women of voting age. And that is a demographic that could and should be a force to be reckoned with. Hopefully this helps turn out more votes.

(32,093 posts)I doubt many of these people were ever her fans to begin with. And, imagine how they're feeling now that they're now forced to side with Kanye West. This reminds me of the hissy fit they threw when Willie Nelson gave a benefit concert for Beto O'Rourke. They all ranted and raved that Willie "just a fan", when it's obvious they weren't fans to begin with. It's not like he's ever hidden his liberal leanings.
I think there is also a HUGE amount of fear here, as well. Swift's fan base is absolutely MASSIVE and Oprah Winfrey-like. If she endorses something, it's as good as gold with her fan base.
zipplewrath
(16,646 posts)That's my primary concern. The age block of her fan base has a poor turn out tendency.

I must admit tasting a bit of bile in the back of my throat at the thought of anything even close to that spectacle.
But, at the end of the day, it turns out Taylor Swift is a human being. I'm glad to learn.

Steve Earle is an honest to Dog Socialist, whose Revolution Starts Now tour after the November 2004 elections -- where Kerry lost -- saved many of us from a funk/depression much like we are seeing with trump now.

(100,102 posts)I would say headliners for all 3 nights:
Night 1 - Neil Young & Promise Of The Real
Paul McCartney
Night 2 - Taylor Swift
Travis Scott
Night 3 - Pearl Jam
Nine Inch Nails
Other bands on the bill I would include:
- Rise Against
- The Roots
- 311
- Willie Nelson
- George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic
- Cypress Hill
- Mighty Mighty Bosstones
- Dropkick Murphys
- Flogging Molly
- Anti-Flag
- The Decemberists
- Scars On Broadway
- Chromeo
- Clutch
- AWOLNATION
- Cold War Kids
- Macklemore
- The National
- Portugal The Man
- Tom Morello
- Gogol Bordello
- Arcade Fire
- Anderson Paak
All of these bands are known to be part of the resistance. I'm sure there's tons more that could be included.

(50,562 posts)MAGAts listen to country music. It's not a universal, but it's not far from it.
Taylor Swift has been largely a pop star for quite a few years. When she was country, they couldn't think of a nice thing to say about her. She's pretty, she writes her own songs, and she doesn't cram Jesus into every little nook and cranny like they demand. So I really doubt any of them listen to her - if they ever did.
If these idiots decide to hold a Taylor Swift Record Burning Party, the first thing they'll have to do is go out and buy Taylor Swift records. The people who actually like Taylor Swift aren't hanging out on those boards.

(18 posts)I am a music fan. I started to get into country music with the band Alabama back in the 1980's. Yes, the same Alabama band that backed Mitt Romney. After Alabama came George Strait. I still listen & like George Strait music. George Strait sang at some kind of event for Papa Bush and was to visit him & Mrs. Bush in the WH. I didn't have a hissy fit or rip up his albums. I am a mature adult. LOL! Everyone has their political views.
These right wingers make me crazy. Do they expect everyone to be a right winger like they are? Not everyone has their views. Willie Nelson said it best. He said he has a right to his own opinion. And so does everyone else. These are such childish acts from the right. They need to grow up and stop complaining about people who don't agree with them.
BTW. I still listen to Alabama. They have a right to their opinion & I have a right to mine. And yet's not forget what they did to the Dixie Chicks.

(15,552 posts)I'm too old to care much about her music, but I worked with young, university students and the girls especially were all into Taylor Swift. I'll bet if she told them to register and vote Dem, many of them would just because of her.
I'm so glad she did this.

(34,491 posts)I am guessing most of them despised Kanye after that fiasco at the Grammys and loved Swift even more. Few years later, they don't say much about Kanye since he came out for Trump. Now it dawns on them that their darling more than likely does not support republicans or Trump for that matter.
