New rule would deny green cards to immigrants who use food stamps or public housing

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration announced a proposed rule Saturday that would make it harder for immigrants already in the U.S. legally, as well as those seeking to enter, to obtain visas or green cards if they have ever been dependent on certain public benefits, like food stamps or public housing.

The proposal, which can become a rule after a public comment period, rewrites a 1999 rule that limited green cards from immigrants who were dependent on cash benefits, but did not take into consideration healthcare or other non-monetary benefits.

"This proposed rule will implement a law passed by Congress intended to promote immigrant self-sufficiency and protect finite resources by ensuring that they are not likely to become burdens on American taxpayers," said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Part of me wonders if this is being exceptionally cruel, and the other part of me wonders how many undocumented people take advantage of public services at all because they don't want to have their names on any kind of government documentation for fear of being deported.

So, if you don't want them to be on the dole, give them a chance to work.

Really? If our resources are so "finite" then why do taxpayers have to pay for the grifting Trumps escapades? Or almost all of his administrations illegal/unethical uses of taxpayer monies?

Nielsen is probably feeding at the trough too. F*** her.

unless you need $ to house minor undocumented children in concentration camps. Then, of course you can rob Head Start and other government programs that you don't like to pay for it. They say that it costs $750 a day per child, which sounds ridiculous. And some owners and operators of these shelters are making huge profits off of this. Totally ridiculous and so short sighted and cruel.

They're exempting benefits received by children and dependents. They're also exempting home heating aid, earned-income tax credit, WIC, Head Start

No change for immigrants currently exempted by law from the "public charge" test: Refugees; asylees; survivors of trafficking, domestic violence, or other serious crimes (T or U visa applicants/holders); VAWA self-petitioners; special immigrant juveniles; certain people paroled into the U.S.; and green card–holders applying for U.S. citizenship.

for benefits - for example, in NY state you have to be a Legal Permanent Resident for 5 years to be eligible for SNAP, unless you are a refugee or fall into a few other categories.
