We know that Donald Trump, the first president without a pet since James K. Polk, appears to hate dogs. And the feeling is mutual, according to one of his ex-wives. He also uses pooches as pejoratives when insulting women.
Dogs, though known for their loyalty, can take only so much from one abusive human. Alas, the same cannot be said for the aging, white, rural and southern people who make up Trumps base. He can lie to them, hurt them with tariffs, make a mockery of their values, suck up to freedom-hating dictators they once distrusted, and theyll stick with him. Cult 45 is thought to be impermeable.
But surprise a raft of new polls show that some of the most hard-core Trumpsters are starting to get a clue. I know, hold your applause. Its like discovering that climate change is not a hoax when your town is under water, and all your commander in chief can do is throw you a roll of paper towels. And the woke among the true believers is small.
The decline could be because Trumps increasingly moonstruck tweets have lost their power. Or maybe its because all of the people around him believe hes an idiot and theyre going public with the consensus inside the White House (another reason to get a dog). But I think Trumps base is showing some erosion because his followers feel he finally crossed a line: Hes now insulting them.

In truth, economics will probably not move Trump supporters. Their vote for him was more about status anxiety in a changing nation than about financial uncertainty. Theyll stay with him only so long as they allow themselves to be easy marks for the insulting con of this presidency. - New York Times

(32,794 posts)The poor southerners and southern types he calls base are quiet about those kinds of things... emotions other than anger are buried deeply...it isnt manly to admit to them or show them in any way. Doesnt mean they wont sometimes act on them. Like FINALLY giving the fatass creep a boot.
Too, dont forget they tire very easily of causes. Takes time away from lounging in the recliner watching sports, and other mind stimulating programs on the teevee, while snacking on junk food and beer.

(21,802 posts)Honestly, I think an overlooked factor is his dickishness at John McCain's death. Christ, even the most deplorable among us know how to fake respect at the death of someone we don't like. You don't have to throw yourself on the coffin and cry, but you need to at least hold your tongue and ACT human.

(6,133 posts)No longer will I have to give any kind of respect to these so called protectors of Christianity.
They worship the biggest pig and the worst person in the world. These so called Christians are now the worst people in the world.
No problem...I knew they sucked, but some decent people still follow him. What do we do?
