PAUL MANAFORT'S $46 MILLION PLEA DEAL

September 14, 2018/3 Comments/in 2016 Presidential Election, Mueller Probe /by emptywheel

Mueller’s office just released a superseding complaint as part of a plea deal with Paul Manafort. He will plead guilty to ConFraudUs tied to his FARA violations and obstruction tied to his witness tampering. The Special Counsel’s office promises “additional information … in the near future.” I guess we’ll learn then whether this involves cooperation (for all we know, Manafort is sitting in front of the grand jury right now).

While Manafort will get off without many new charges in the DC case, he’ll lose his (ostrich skin) shirt. Here’s what is listed in forfeiture.

The property subject to forfeiture by PAUL J. MANAFORT, JR., includes, but is not limited to, the following listed assets:

a. The real property and premises commonly known as 377 Union Street, Brooklyn, New York 11231 (Block 429, Lot 65), including all appurtenances, improvements, and attachments thereon, and any property traceable thereto;

b. The real property and premises commonly known as 29 Howard Street, #4D, New York, New York 10013 (Block 209, Lot 1104), including all appurtenances, improvements, and attachments thereon, and any property traceable thereto;

c. The real property and premises commonly known as 174 Jobs Lane, Water Mill, New York 11976, including all appurtenances, improvements, and attachments thereon, and any property traceable thereto;

d. All funds held in account number XXXXXX0969 at The Federal Savings Bank, and any property traceable thereto;

e. All funds seized from account number XXXXXX1388 at Capital One N.A., and any property traceable thereto; and

f. All funds seized from account number XXXXXX9952 at The Federal Savings Bank, and any property traceable thereto;

g. Northwestern Mutual Universal Life Insurance Policy 18268327, and any property traceable thereto;

h. All funds held in account number XXXX7988 at Charles A. Schwab & Co. Inc., and any property traceable thereto; and

i. The real property and premises commonly known as 1046 N. Edgewood Street, Arlington, Virginia 22201, including all appurtenances, improvements, and attachments thereon, and any property traceable thereto.

This adds both the Federal Savings Bank account listed for forfeiture in the EDVA case, and the Capital One case. And these are subject to both civil and criminal forfeiture, so Trump can’t pardon them away.

Update: On Twitter, several people note that with this forfeiture, the Mueller investigation just more than paid for itself.

1. The 11th hour approaches.

Quoting Rachel, 'the Manafort guilty pleas is a big deal, cooperation is a bigger deal!'

Big mystery is what's coming down at 11a.

My hope is for whatever is worst for traitortrump, that's what I want. Not only for the so key November election, but for traitortrump the person.

I had hoped for the trial to start, with the prosecution laying all that powerful stuff near the feet of trump, then a guilty/cooperation plea.

Now I just hope for cooperation with the guilty plea - and hope that works out badly for trump November.

14. Manafort's head on a stick serves as

A warning to tRump of what is ahead for him. The witch hunt is finding witches left and right. And when they put tRump’s Head right up there with the rest will be the day we’ve all been waiting for!

3. I want to see the list of all drumph's assets when he goes down.

Do not give that turd any breaks.

And that includes security for life as an ex-president. Not that he'll need as much in prison.

33. Well, the U.S. is his target. Trump was always temporary,

and he's reportedly gotten a far larger return on all this than he'd imagined possible in the beginning.

I'd guess Putin's planning to use Trump's downfall to prolong our troubles if there's a way. And if other power centers here don't convince him that'd be a very bad idea. His predecessor as the wealthiest oligarch in Russia was arrested and his wealth divided among the rest. He's a lot more powerful, but that power depends on his keeping his fellow oligarchs well fed.

42. I'm very positive that if Donald goes down and his assets are seized, it'll all be debt.

I don't think the asswipe is worth a fucking penny - leveraged to the hilt and deep in debt is what that shitstain mugwump is.

And most of that debt will be to Russian bankers, or more likely criminals, and/or the Russian government itself (which is probably the same thing as "criminals".

36. Accepting a pardon means admitting guilt

Since forfeitures are from "ill gotten gains", and there is no doubt of the guilt, the seizures should still remain.

7. Manafort is deeply odious and deserves all the prison time coming to him.

And I will not stop banging this particular drum, because I feel like it's about time one of these wealthy profiteers finally gets some comeuppance instead of just getting away with it.

Paul Manafort is a deeply shitty human being. No matter how much you hate Paul Manafort, you should hate him more, because he has profited off of war, political unrest, death, and destruction for decades. Shilling for Trump may have been the least objectionable thing he's done in his incredible history of absolute evil. Here's a great precis of why you don't hate Manafort nearly enough:

Paul Manafort and his buddy Roger Stone have decades of blood on their hands. They wade through it knee-deep to make themselves richer and richer.

l and that he will get pardoned. I don't get the disappointment. If Trump pardons him then that would be part of obstruction, wouldn't it?

24. I think Manafort retains the debt, but loses the asset.

When the police seize a vehicle when they find three flakes of weed and the owner is underwater on the car loan, I don't think it turns out well for the little guy.

Of course, that's just a guess. Does anyone know for certain?

Let that sink in.

He willingly gave $46 million to get something - a lighter sentence, some years of freedom.

$46,000,000.00 is a lot to forfeit.
