(4,402 posts)or any of the "Xteen Kids and Counting" TV shows for examples.
It's basically fundamentalist Christianity with an extra emphasis on members converting non-members.
The father is the head of the household and is God's minister to his family. The wife is his "helpmeet". All the kids have a duty to obey their father.
Absolutely no sex before marriage. Also no kissing or physical contact. The boy asks for permission to court and then to marry the girl from her father. All dates are chaperoned. Girls have to wear dresses that completely cover their arms and legs. Some girls wear creepy chastity rings to symbolise their "marriage" to their father until he is ready to give them away.
Abortion is obviously an abomination. Most Evangelicals also think birth control is wrong because it thwarts God's will. "Quiverful" Evangelicals think that God wants them to raise an army of little Christian soldiers to fight for him ("arrows in God's quiver" and that they have a duty to bear and raise as many children as God provides.
Many Evangelicals won't watch television and think any music except Christian music and any dancing is sinful.
Most Evangelicals believe in "spare the rod, spoil the child" and still use corporal punishment on their kids.
Some are also "born again Christians". They don't baptize babies but wait until the kid is old enough to choose and then the baptism is a form of rebirth.
Every Evangelical I have ever met votes Republican. They are brainwashed into it in church.

(3,585 posts)A HERETIC I AM
(24,376 posts)Meaning they take what the Bible says about the Origin of the earth, among other tenets, as literal truth, I.e; that the Earth and all the universe was created in six, twenty four hour periods between six and 10,000 years ago.
As mentioned above, they take the passage of John 3:3 completely literally, that you must be born again in order to enter the kingdom of god.
Most evangelicals in this country fail immeasurably with regard to the beatitudes (the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount) and many of the other alleged teachings of Christ, in that they tend to be in favor of the death penalty and hate immigrants, poor people and anyone that does not think like they do.
In short, they are religious assholes.

(24,376 posts)I was baptized when I was an infant and was confirmed in the Episcopal Church (at the National Cathedral in Washington DC, no less) , a member of the Anglican Union and the Church Of England, when I was a teenager.
So, yes. I have as much authority to speak on the veracity of an ancient myth system as anyone else.
In other words, it is all bullshit mythology and deserves to be relegated to the dustbin of history

(24,376 posts)Lets hope WHAT changes some day?
If you are suggesting that someday I will be a Christian, hope all you want. I WAS one.
I no longer have an interest in subscribing to a pointless, Bronze Age, Middle Eastern death cult

Mariana
(14,860 posts)That's why there are thousands of denominations, each one certain that they are right and that everyone else is doing it wrong. Evangelicals aren't any different in that regard.

(31,261 posts)Some are really decent, charitable, progressives. Maybe they are not fully with us on issues like Choice and Gay Marriage, but on all other critical policy, they are fighting with us, while remaining silent on what they disagree with us on.
Maybe when you talk about evangelicals, use a distinction, call out the rightwing evangelicals, who are horrible, evil people.

(2,199 posts)They claim to be the only human beings god loves.
They weaponize bible quotes to serve their own needs.
Do as I say, not as I do is their mantra, as they pass judgment on the rest of us.
