On wars and rumors of wars

Grandpa Dumpy had a bad night last night.

That's right, folks. He's more or less threatening to turn Iran into a nuclear lake based on threats they make.

As is obvious, this is not a well man. Anyone not president who made threats like this for massive violence would be reported to local police. Instead, Trump has his finger on the red button.

We can expect more of this as the walls close in. The Manafort trial begins this Wednesday. (Trump's tweets this morning were about the "witch hunt".) His subservience to Russia for reasons that we all know of was laid bare last week. Democracies are shunning him, and dictatorships are using him. And with Maria Butina's indictment, the whole corrupt GOP house of cards seems set to come crashing down. So what would be better than a splendid little war to distract the proles?

Except, of course, if he were foolish enough to engage Iran, it would be his end. He's not George W. Bush, with a 90% approval rating after 9/11. Even his "strong support" is only at 29%. This is not a lot of political capital on which to launch a war. His party would be wiped out in the House, and even Republican senators might vote to convict him in an impeachment trial. Destroying the world economy to distract from domestic troubles is generally the sign of a madman, and he could expect to be treated as such.

As Mueller keeps tightening the noose, as the midterms loom ever nearer, we honestly don't know what Trump will do. And that's mostly because he doesn't know what he'll do. Mental decline and narcissism are a dangerous combination. He sees his genius being unappreciated, and is embittered that he can't order this country like his heroes order theirs. Someone like this would be quite sanguine about burning it all down if he has to go down. It's not too early to start thinking about what was once unthinkable: that state institutions might have to revolt against an unhinged commander-in-chief to preserve the nation and the world.

But, her emails.

Yep. The scary part is that he will try to take us all down with him.

I have yet to see one picture of him that does not show his dead blank eyes and his face is the true measure of his insanity. No sane man threatens a nuclear war on twitter in all caps.
