Trump, stumping in Nevada, makes immigration a central midterms issue for GOP

By Philip Rucker
June 23 at 6:10 PM

LAS VEGAS — President Trump embraced hard-line immigration policies as a centerpiece of the Republican Party’s midterm campaign strategy here Saturday, a risky move as he stumped for an endangered GOP senator in this rapidly diversifying swing state.

Defending the work of border agents who have come under scrutiny for taking migrant children away from their parents as part of his administration’s family separation policy, Trump said Democrats “just want to use this issue — and I like the issue for [the] election, too.”

“Our issue is strong borders, no crime,” Trump said in an address to the Nevada Republican Party’s state convention. “Their issue is open borders, get MS-13 all over our country. .?.?. We need people to come in, but they have to be people that love this country, can love our country, and can really help us to make America great again.”

The president went on to praise law enforcement for rounding up illegal immigrants suspected of being MS-13 gang members, putting them in “paddy wagons” and getting them “the hell out of our country.”

Because this issue enrages Republicans and gets them to the polls. Karl Rove used similar tactics in 2004

Yet so much of the press describes this as a political win for Democrats.

He was given power by the people. There are times when appealing to our lower nature works. This whole thing might actually work and scares the hell out of me.

Hindenburg appointed Hitler chancellor 30 January 1933. The Reichstag burned 27 February. Hindenburg gave Hitler sweeping emergency powers under Article 48 of the Constitution on 28 February: it suspended most rights, and large numbers of people were jailed before the 5 March elections. Nazi paramilitary organizations "monitored" the voting. A significant fraction of the parliamentary opposition was in jail when the Enabling Act was passed on 23 March
