Newborns separated from parents are in immigrant shelters near Miami, lawmaker says

At least 10 newborns and toddlers taken away from their parents after crossing the the U.S.-Mexico border are being housed in so-called "tender-age shelters" near Miami, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz told the Miami Herald on Saturday.

The Florida lawmaker said the children — from newborns to 5 years old — are being sheltered at His House Children’s Home near Miami Gardens and Catholic Charities' Msgr. Bryan Walsh Children’s Village in Cutler Bay, formerly known as Boys Town

These facilities are also housing about 88 separated children ages 6 to 12, she said.

When the congresswoman provided the Miami Herald with these figures, she cited a document given to her by federal officials.

Mark Weber, spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, could not immediately confirm the figures provided by Wasserman Schultz. He described "tender-age" shelters as facilities for youths 12 and younger.

so very sad we are at this point 2018.

We have a very evil POS squatting in the WH. He should be impeached that fucking Congress (repigs) should be using the 25th Amendment but they are accomplices and cowards.

there was a fascinating article in a journal called Z (something or other), probably linked in a thread here at DU. It was written by an A&E specialist ; normally, it is viewed as a stepping-stone to more prestigious specialisms, but he chose it as his career ; one of the many good Jewish guys.

The overarching theme was that our health depended to a large extent. on our sense of well-being, and was very much a function of a comparison with that of the other members of the person's own society, notably of course., their socio-economic peers.

However, another major factor in recovery from sickness and surgery is family support. He said that the Latinos scored very highly in this area, as they are so extremely family-oriented ; so much so, that he often had to ask who was the casualty and who were their family members accompanying them, to give them support and encouragement! So that would have made this crime all the more heinous, were it possible. You wonder what will be going through the minds and hearts of the world leaders, when Donald meets them in the future.

I have a 5-month old great grandson. He spent the night at our house last night (Gramma, Grampa, and me, GreatGran) for the first time so his mommy and daddy could go out for the evening and then get a full night's sleep. About 30 minutes after they left, he went into full melt-down (separation anxiety). Cried for an hour or more. Not just cried, but really wailed! We fed him, we bathed him, we each rocked him in the rocking chair. He finally fell asleep in my arms in the rocking chair.

My little guy actually knows all of us; I take care of him three mornings a week and he sees Gramma and Grampa frequently so he wasn't left with strangers. He slept all night and woke up with smiles. He had a big grin when mommy and daddy came to pick him up.

Now think of those babies being held in detention centers -- imagine the separation anxiety experienced by not just one baby, but by all of them. This is torture! Sheer torture!!! And to add to the trauma, the care-takers aren't allowed to pick them up to comfort them. This is inhumane! It will be a long time, if ever, that they see a familiar face and have the comfort of loving arms.

The United Nations needs to condemn this. Charges of cruelty should be brought in the International Court at the Hague. It's damn certain that Republicans are more interested in maintaining political power than they are in protecting babies who come to this country by whatever means. Republicans are sub-human. Don't bother me with stories about how you know a few good ones -- you DON'T! If they vote Republican, they are completely complicit in the torture of babies. Fact -- not hyperbole!

It is unconscionable that Trump and his minions are allowed to get away with removing children from their parents, sending them hither and yon, and informing no-one how to locate them.

The relevant sequence runs from 2:10 to 5:00, but if you want a shorter clip, focusing only on the child's terror and the mother's despair over being forced to make an impossible choice, start at 3:50.

These parents are being forced to make an impossible choice--stay in their country, where their children are likely to fall victim to gang violence, or make a dangerous trek to the US border, where they are not likely to be allowed to stay anyway. And ten they are threatened with never being allowed to get their kids back unless they sign voluntary deportation papers, though even then they are often not reunited before being deported.
