This is another example of democrats giving a pass that they can't expect for themselves.
When the Clintons came into office they had an awesome cat named Socks. The republicans had a patriotic fit that those rotten Clintons didn't have the traditional pet that every American president has had since Adam met Eve and shamed them into getting a dog they didn't really want. It was during the shaming that Rush Limbaugh made his Chelsea joke on TV that she was indeed the official White House dog. Fortunately, that was the end of his small screen career, but that's how badly they were badgered.
When the Obama's entered office they had no pets at all that I recall, and the republicans were relentless in pointing out how un-American they were to not own a decent dog to run the grounds like their patriotic predecessors. The subsequent relentless shaming led to the adoption of Bo The Water Dog, a companion I'm sure the Obama's love, but probably hadn't considered until republicans expressed their distrust of a president without a dog.
Now I wonder, where's Trump's Great American Canine? Why aren't key democrats and liberal media "hounding" him persistently about his hatred of American values? I think it's petty, sure, but there's no reason to let him off the hook that the GOP so skillfully baits for every democratic president. Besides, it'd be interesting to see what kind of dog he chooses for his potential abuse. My guess is a Russian Wolfhound. More likely, he'll blame Melania's "allergies".
On edit:
This isn't really about wanting Trump to get a dog, nor was that the goal of republicans when they shamed the Clintons and Obamas for not having one. The key word here is "shaming".

(18,702 posts)They just wanted to point out how different they were from "patriotic" presidents like Reagan and the Bushes. Democrats should play that card as well, often as possible. It's not like such tactics don't work.

(82,383 posts)they could have a puppy. I remember him saying it. So maybe it was not the pressure. But of course on DU, it had to be a rescue dog, and some were not even satisfied with the type of rescue dog. It had to be a certain type due to Malia's allergies, I think.

(4,238 posts)for not having a dog, and frankly it doesnt even make the Top 100 list of why trump is a fucktard. I find criticism of people not having a dog akin to couples choosing to remain childless. Not everyone, including some kind people, want the responsibility of keeping a pet. Id rather the trumps not a adopt a dog if theyd most likely never care for or enjoy one.

Donald Trump once lived with a dog.
It was actually Ivana Trump's. The President, who doesn't have a pet at the White House, lived with Ivana and her poodle, Chappy, during the course of their marriage.
"Donald was not a dog fan. When I told him I was bringing Chappy with me to New York, he said, 'No,'" Trump wrote.
"'It's me and Chappy or no one!' I insisted, and that was that."
Chappy, she later wrote, "had an equal dislike of Donald."

They ended up not bringing a puppy with them to the White House but instead decided to adopt a puppy from the litter that produced Ted Kennedy's two dogs, Sunny and Splash, and when the puppies were weaned, they brought Bo home.
Thinking about those days so filled with hope and change - and decency and family and love and pride and humility and competence - makes me tear up.

I don't recall the Obamas being criticized for their pet status. During the campaign, they said several times that they had promised a dog to the girls post-election, whatever happened.

Trump showed Barron a picture of a dog making him think that was going to be the dog he would adopt. Barron started crying happy tears at seeing the pic of the dog that would be his. then trump told him he isn't going to get it.
